hey all, im planning on doing a cam this winter and i got some questions.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CP5uefxVh8U http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ua8AG...eature=related
im really liking the ms4 cam or the MTI cam..im just super loving the sound and was wondering what kind of power outputs to expect and driveability..as of now i have LTs, catless X.borla straight pipes.and a vararam..
or would i be better off with like a comp camp..228/232 something along those lines..i want a meeaann idle and make good power
when i do the cam i just plan on doing rods and springs along with it..i know people like to do timing chain and port the pump but i don't know if i'll have the extra cash to be doing that..so will i be ok with just doin rods and springs..
what ranges would the ms4 cam be good for..low,mid,high,all around?
also what are the side affects and disadvantages of running a big cam..
thanks in advance!

The ms4 is definitely a upper power band cam, you can get a nasty lope w/o having to go so big as idle speed and overlap play a big part. The drawback of a big cam is loss of low end power and surging at low speeds. I'd stick more in the range of the 228/232 you mentioned especially if this is your 1st cammed vehicle. Let me know if you have any other questions, Chris
its for the most part a daily driver..go out racing with friends and such often (mostly roll races)..occasionally the track..so far my PB is a 12.2 on street tires..i know i can hit 11s on radials..i wanna go for mid 11s..and of course whoop my dads and uncles c6z06s haha
Take a ride over to Speed Inc. They know a few things about camshafts.
I have a comp cam 220/220, .581/.581, 112LSA. This was installed years ago and back then it was a decent cam. Nowadays with the right tuning you can get pretty wild and still retain driveability. The 112LSA has a really nice lope to it. Never a problem since installed. And I do highly suggest porting the oil pump. Oil starvation is a real bad thing and isn't uncommon on some early C5's. Rods and springs are a must though. I did the double row timing chain but also knew I only wanted to open the front of the engine once.
i went into speed inc yesterday..they said i'll be good with just rods and springs..i dont really have to worry about the extra precautions since my car is a 04 with 40k on it..they said if your over 60k than the rest would be a good idea
If you are that close to speedinc than what tyhe heck you doin here...lol. Man thier SI5 Cam is pretty nasty sounding and let them tune it too because its thier cam and they tuned this hundreds.
Get thier package deal and done with it. PAC 1518 springs would be pretty good option. Katech Timing chain or LS2, Ls6 ported oil pump, manton 11/32 oil restrict push rods (because too much oil to Rocker area and less oil at lifter area not good, so order those they know what iam talking about).
UD harmonic balancer is a option iam sure they will not charge extra labor on those.
GL man thats my favourite shop.
Edit: Oh that black z06 with MS4 is a great video and i swear i know few and plenty others there as well who sold to MS4 Cam TSP should give some to that MS4 guy.

??? I lost you after 'great video'!! Yeah, I have watched that videos 100 times!!!
I'd still like to drive in one though, or see a dyno sheet overlayed on a 228 cam dyno sheet!!
speed inc is a bit pricey..their cam package is 2000...their dyno tunes are 500..when i do the cam im gonna be taking my vette to Fast Motorsports..their 350 for a dyno tune and do excellent work
Most car people use the word "rod" to refer to connecting rods.
For most people, the MS4 is too big for a daily driver. While some of the shaking and driveabilty nuances add to the experience of owning a cam'd car, there are definitely times when you'll get tired of it in a daily driver.
Pre-Z06 gave you sound advice, in my opinion. Good luck with your project.

Plus its all in how one builds the car. I know guys who have an MS4 and get yanked by cars with smaller cams. I too am doing a cam when i return home from the D and at first i said MS3 but after using my head a little bit, doing some talking, researching, crunching numbers, Ive decided on texasspeed 233/239 on a 113. It will be PERFECT for my car. Good luck.
looking at the patrick G custom grind 231/235 .617/.620" 112+4lsa...was just curiouse about the lift being so big..is that gonna cause clearance issues??

It's not really lift that's the problem, but duration, and lobe separation angle. I'd definately check clearance with that cam.
