Default Thoughts on fuel additives

I know my opinion wondering what anyone thinks. I have an 04 LS1 and every couple of months I throw a can of BG 44k in the tank. For no real reason just a preventative maint. thing. I know about the sulfer deposits on the sending unit on the early C5's and how they recommend Chevron Techron every so often to help the inacurate fuel gauge reading but I think my 04 they had that ironed out so I don't do it for that reason. Again just a maint. thing to keep the injectors clean. Thoughts ?

Here is an article about fuel additives..

http://stason.org/TULARC/vehicles/ga...ives-work.html

IMO gas additives are not worth the cost as long as you use a quality name brand gasoline that already contain additives (Shell, Exxon, etc.). Generic discount gas stations buy fuel based on price...you may get a quality name brand gas with additives or "el cheapo" with little or no additives to keep your engine clean.

Case in point: I owned a 2006 Charger SRT8 6.1 Hemi that I always used Exxon gas in. A friend of mine owned one just like mine but he always bought gas from the discount stations.

When I traded my car he wanted the PP heads I had on mine so we switched prior to trading. The PP heads had been on my car for about 15K miles. His engine had about 17K miles on it.

The intake ports on my heads looked brand new. No deposits at all.

The intake ports on his heads were coated with a "gummy" yellowish film.

The only additives I use are for octane boost when I have a tune that requires more octane (I had 3 tunes on my SCT for the Viper truck, 93 octane, 97 octane and 100 octane). The two brands I use are Lucas and Torco. Both are proven by 3rd party testing to add octane "numbers" (not "points" like most additives do).

Octane "number" equals whole numbers like 3.0....."points" equal tenths like .3. Points are what most boosters are actually claiming. When you use boosters like STP that claim up to 5 points increase you are actually only increase 93 octane gas to 93.5 octane.

Whoever attached their BG banner to my message I don't appreciate it !!!!!!!!! This post was not a BG add. I merely mentioned that I use the product. You just lost a customer , nice job. To be honest it's waaaayyy overpriced and no noticible benefit.

I'm pretty sure it takes key words from the post and that how they show up.

I'm a bit confused... you said earlier that you use it every couple of months as a preventative measure... If it's doing it's job, exactly what benefit did you expect to notice?

BG-44 is one of the best products of its type on the market. I personally have made it a habit of adding a bottle of Techron or other quality fuel injection cleaner to my EFI cars whenever I do an oil change. For me that ends up being once or twice a year. I do keep a couple cans of BG-44 on hand for certain family members that don't believe in preventative maintenance...

Good luck... GUSTO

What banner? Oh, that one. Wouldn't have noticed it if you hadn't said anything. It is like all the other banners. Just a way to get money to support the forum and its owners which 99% of the members don't even notice.

You would have noticed it when it was planted smak dab in your post and then right below your post. It's no longer there only at the bottom now. Either that or I guess I'm just one of the 1% of observant people. Actually the only reason I made such a big deal about it was because I am new to this site and thought I would be accused of breaking some rule on advertising.

I've used BG44K with good results on all my cars....but it is expensive and sometimes hard to find locally.

I switched to Redline SL-1 and achieved similar cleaning results.I like to run a can thru at every OCI.

As always,IMO.Opinions & Results vary!

I sure hope no one gets upset because this question has been asked before, and spanks me with the dreaded "dead horse" icon.

Regarding the use of Techron...

It appears to come in 12 oz containers and 20 oz containers. What's the recommendation on frequency of use, and dosage of ounces per tank of gas?

Can it be used "too much"? I.E., is there any downside other than what some might call un-necessary expense if it's used, say, every 1000 miles?

I also see Techron Fuel System Cleaner (67740), and Techron Concentrate Fuel System Cleaner (67740-C). What the difference, and is there a preference?

Fresh fuel + Drive hard for full tank = clean engine

Additives are not needed, unless you drive like a grandpa all the time.

Get on the throttle too clean her out.

I dont know if it needed the heat of combustion or the movement of the engine running or what but I soaked the carbon crusted valves off of a motorcycle rebuild in seafoam for a week until I could get to them. The seafoam didnt even scratch the carbon.

Fuel additives can be effective for specific purposes, (storage, cleaning or removing existing deposits on fuel level sensors). Most are made up of varying combination of the similar components, naptha, toulene, IPA, white oil, xylene, stoddard solvent (dry cleaning fluid), etc...
The best preventative method for keeping your intake tract and combustion chambers clean is to use good quality fuel (top-tier) and open it up every now and then.
