If you bought the shifter new, it should have come with different sets of spring combinations allowing for very firm to easier shifting efforts.
If you bought the shifter used, evidently you didn't get the other spring sets. I'm not sure you can remove just one spring and get reliable performance. I could be wrong.
You might contact HURST/B&M to see if the springs are available ala carte or if you can remove just one spring w/o any issues. Otherwise, you have to live with it, experiment with hardware store springs, or find another shifter.
Have you tried backing out the two adjustment screws on the top of the shifter? These two screws (allen head) adjust how hard the springs are pressed down. Try backing them out a little at a time until you are satisfied with the feel. Use locktite (blue) to hold them in place.
Be sure everything is adjusted and lubed nicely. That makes a big difference in shifter feel.
