Would tuning an unmodified 99 auto make any difference in performance? If so could I have that done at Carlisle? Do I need to make an appointment? I've never been there and plan on going this year.
ABSOLUTELY--- as far as the eng goes--any C5 is already pretty well tuned bone stock - maybe only 10-15 RWHP on the table--BUT with an A4--you can make your car 2-4 tenths quicker in the 1/4 mi with trans tuning alone !!! and it will run cooler--shift firmer and last longer !!!
Thanks, I'll need to find someone near my home in Pittsburgh. Anyone have any suggestions?
Throw a freer flowing air intake and then take it in for a tune. You can get an extra 20hp and much better throttle response and shift performance. If you have plans for future mods get an LS6 intake manifold.
I had ECS do my tune on a stock A4 at Carlisle, amazing results. Took the ECM out and took it to Carlisle. After header install had it tuned again at Carlisle.
An A4 can pick up some good gains, but considering what tunes cost, If you have ANY plans to mod the car, just wait until you install the mods.
Tunes are usually in the $500+ range, so the performance bang for buck is low.
As far as mail order tunes (much cheaper) they can set up a good generic tune for your trans that will be as good as a hands on tuner, but they CAN NOT get the engine to run as well (LTFTs PE etc) as an actual tuner can
If you wait until Carlisle, ECS was doing a tune special for as low as $99 (think that was the price for all C5s). Can't speak for them as to whether it will be the same price this year, but it seemed to be the best deal. Doug did my car when it was bone stock a couple of years ago and previously I had always thought you at least waited until headers and a CAI for a tune. He changed my mind, and for $99 it was well worth it.
If you want to do it sooner, call them about a mail order tune.

Thanks for the referrals gents!
We will be tuning as usual at Carlisle again this year for the $99 special. If you choose not to wait until Carlisle we have our $149 mail in special that we can do at anytime which includes return shipping of the PCM, and we turn them around the same day received.
If you go into the C5 scan and tune section of the forum, you can find tutorials from literally 100's of happy ECS customers. We would love to add you to that list as well.
We do retune at a reduced price, dont get swept away from claims of free retunes, our pricing is more reasonable with several retunes then our competitions first go around, with actual track and dyno testing to back up our work.
I had my C5 A4 done at ECS in Cream ridge NJ and believe me it's night and day. Plus don't forget if you bring it to their NJ location they can also do all the right maintenance.
Talk to Chuck @ COW..he KNOWS how to tune an auto trans. Many of us are very happy with our COW tunes and free re-tunes are nice after minor mods
I agree 100% Chuck's transmission tune is the best. You will be very happy with the results. Call Chuck at Corvettes Of Westchester and discuss you goals.
If it were me, I would install a Vararam, drive to his shop and let him do a full tune on it. You will have different car!
I drive to his shop from CT, so, it worth the trip. He also has something called AUTOCAL that allows you to tune by data logging the car and sending Chuck the data log file. He will recalibrate/Tune your PCM and you just up load the tune file into the car.
