"...the fluid has the potential to enable improved fuel economy..."
Doesn't really state that they designed it for better fuel economy, but given the entire industries push for lower viscosity fluids, doesn't seem like a stretch to me to believe that the reason the viscosity of Dexron VI is about 40% lower than that of Dexron III is to improve fuel economy.

Here is part of the article that others might find interesting:
All licenses for DEXRON-III expired at the end of 2006 and will not be renewed. Fluids sold in the market after that date bearing claims such as "suitable for use in DEXRON-III applications" or similar wording should be avoided, because 'DEXRON-III' fluids are no longer checked and policed by GM and therefore may not be the originally tested and approved formulation.
Keep in mind that this article was published back in 2009, over two years ago by Roy Fewkes and Joan Petit. I've had Dexron-VI in my 2000 6-speed for well over a year with more than 20K miles on the fluid. My tranmission shifts like new, maybe even a little better than new.
I'm going to try and get in touch with Mr. Roy Fewkes and see if there is a later update. If not, see I he might write one.
