Default Manual transmission question

Called the dealership about getting my 6 speed trans fluid changed on a 99 vert. Came back with a $240 estimate. The service advisor said the filter and pan gasket was the reason for the high price. Is there a filter and pan gasket on a MN6? I wasn't sure but didn't sound right to me.

I didn't think you needed to change manual tranny fluid?

The guy is either STUPID or trying to screw you. 6 speed tranny fluid change is 3-4 qts of synthetic ATF and 1/2 hour labor max. Open drain plug and then remove temp sensor to refill. NO screen or gasket replacement is involved. Anything more than $100 (and that is high) is too much !!

I needed mine changed the other day before a track event and didtn have time to do it. I think I paid $120. They would use either Mobil 1, or Red Line for that price.

Thanks everyone. I thought that was the case and I told the guy twice it was a stick. The vette tech is pretty good at this dealer and it's local but obviously the service advisor is stupid.

Super easy to replace the fluids.
I wrote a procedure on my web page to help folks out.
Do it yourself and you will KNOW its done right.

Thanks for a very clear and informative tutorial!

I am sure that many more CF members appreciate it as much as I do.

Your welcome. When I went to learn how to do mine last Dec I could not find a procedure. So I made one... Its a lot easier than I thought. It "IS" messy though...

Simple Green will help though...

Default Hey Logg !!!

Your 99 6 speed should not have anything but Dexron 3 ATF. I understand our early manuals can be damaged by using synthetic fluids. We have "paper" blockers that will be destroyed with Mobile 1 ect.

I would bet that the mechanic is removing the pan, cleaning it and then reinstalling it.
Maybe not just changing the fluid.....................

Have you ever been under a C5? There is no pan on an Mn6 tranny.

I'm in Columbia. If you want to drive down with the proper fluid, I'll do it for $40. Or nothing, if you prefer. Ralph Boineau

do some research on the fluid before you buy it. I have a 2000 and went with the amsoil as research here told me not to get synthetic fluid due to the paper/cellulos blocker rings-I don't know what those are but I know they don't like synthetic fluid according to my fellow CF brethren

Honestly...I'd almost let them do this and have them write "return all parts, filters and gaskets" on the invoice...

No, there's no filter or gasket. Easily removed and clearly labeled drain and fill plugs.

I expect he just misheard and thought it was an auto...or, of course, they're um...

The GM fluid #88861800 is what is recommended for pre 2001 MN6 equiped cars.

+1. The Dexron 3 is still available at Walmart and O'Reilly. I just did this on my '98. Shifts better after the change. Well worth $11 in fluid and an hour of my time.

I called Tremec several months ago and they recommended Mobil 1 for my 99 MN6.

My 99 has a Borg Warner tranny, will Tremec pull out your transmission and make repairs based on their recommendation for your unit?

The info I gave for the Dexron 3 came out of the FSM for 1999 Corvette's so I know that's good, my concern with synthetics is from warnings of other forum members, so proceed at your own risk.
