Default Cometic Head Gasket Question

Is there anything unique about the install of Cometic MLS head gasket on my LS1? I have heard rumors of potential problems with this brand and wanted to make sure I was doing everything correctly. The instructions merely state to "install dry." I have installed many stock GM MLS gaskets without issue and wanted to make sure I was on the right track with the Cometic. Thanks much. Jon Cona

Some people install them dry, some people spray them with copper coat. I've always done the later. The biggest thing is to make sure the surface are perfectly clean with no scratches. They are not as forgiving at stock MLS gaskets.

I checked for flatness with a machinist straight edge and then checked the surface roughness to make sure I had the correct finish. I used Hylomar spray on mine.

Hey Jon,

We did meet at MIR. Unfortunately, my car wouldn't shift after the first easy run. Since then I've had Rick Kim do his magic on the tranny and rear and pulled the Spec 3+ and put in an RPS Twin Lite. Hopefully, I'll get a couple clean runs in this fall.

Out of curiosity - did you measure RA on the block and the head? What kind of clean-up did you do and what were the RA #s?

I am thinking of swapping in Cometics, but the RA reqs have me worried.

Thanks.
