Default clutch issues/harder to shift....

I've got a 2004, 60k miles, noted a couple of minor issues late this summer.
-shifting though never smooth is getting more "sticky", harder to find the correct gear
-noted a "hot asbestos" smell when driven around town, lots of stop and go, hot weather. It's not the brake pads.
-clutch fluid looks ok

Clutch/pressure plate? ran the high rpm, slutch engaged test, car doesn't move. Anything else to try or help diagnose?

How long does the clutch last in a C5; not first owner, though, I think it's been driven moderately.
thanks
Jim

The very first thing that I would do would be to change your NASTY trans fluid. I recommend a good synthetic . I used Mobile 1 Synthetic ATF and it made a very nice difference in the shift feel

Remove the console and lube up the shift box. you will be amazed at how stiff they can get.

Align your shifter and make sure that the rubber bushings that mount the shift box to the torque tube are not deteriorated and loose.

A clutch's longevity definitely is driver dependent, the smell is concerning. Does it seem to be slipping?

I have almost same thing with my stick.

Sometimes 1st gear feels like i have to press it in 2-3 times to get it in, and i aint skinny haha. i try not to push in to hard, but it takes quite an effort. the worst thing is, sometimes you dont know if it really is in first gear, or reverse, but i feel the first gear more, so i almost never grind it(sometimes it stucks between..) reverse stucks every so. and grinds, hurts me deeply in hearth..

would an short shifter be more confident that gear is in 'gear' ?

thanks
Denis

if you are having problems getting the oem stick in gear, a short shifter might be impossible. those are by design very notchy and stiff

As Bill has already suggested, get the old sticky trans fluid out of there and put some new in.
