Default Differential "whine"

Drove the Vette out to Oklahoma a few months back, on the way out and back, started hearing a whining noise, has gotten worse as time goes on. Is there anyway to determine if its transmission, differential or possibly something with the clutch? It sure sounds like the 4.10s that I had in my Iroc years ago that weren't set up right. It makes the noise upon light acceleration or constant speed, all gears, just seems louder in 5th than any other. Clutch pedal feels normal, have never really "beat" on this car, I drive my GN like I stole it, so have no reason to with the vette. Only has 57k miles. Beins it is going to be over $2k to replace the rear end, I'd like to know for sure that's what the issue is before dropping the money only to have the same noise coming from the car after the new diff install. Fluids are full in the trans and diff.

I'd change out and inspect the fluid. Sounds like a rear to me. See if you've got clutch material and/or metal in there.

Just went through it myself, had DTE rebuild it.

Does it sound like this video? Mine started as a ringing between 50-60mph, and developed into a gear whine. Always at the same speed. I isolated it to the diff by putting on jackstands, and having a helper run it up to speed, while I snoop underneath on a creeper. It was easy to find the source. It was fixed with a new ring & pinion from RPM transmissions.

That's almost the exact sound! Amount of whine varies with throttle. I'm going to drain both trans and rear to see what the fluid looks like. Will see what the differences are between RPM and DTE, sure doesn't look like a fun job to replace, but DIY sure beats labor charges!

fyi. mine started whining after an HDPE day at 120,000 miles. It's at 190,000 now and still whines. It appears to simply be noise and not the precurser to something horrible. But again - that's a single experience.

Yeah, I don't really see it causing any real trouble (unless there's a ton of metal in the fluid), it's just really irritating because I've never driven the car hard, bought it with 35k miles and it just doesn't seem right that a diff of a "high performance" car starts making noise with 55k miles on it.

I'm having the same problem on my new-to-me car with 81,000 miles. I'm not real crazy about my mechanic's suggestion-$2,000 for a new transmission.

Sorry to hear that
I'd say look for a used trans, and install it yourself. I really don't want to drop the entire rear suspension, but I think I'm going to to 3.73 gears, a set of C6Z06 shocks and an elite engineering tunnel plate while I'm under there. With it that far apart, I'm thinking I should do a new clutch too.... and start driving it hard!

IF,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, You have to do rear-end or tranny work,, here are a few tips and recommendations that I have found thru-out the years:

-If you get a new clutch and fly wheel,,, IF the OEM Flywheel has offset balance weights in the out rim of the fly wheel,,, Either transfer the weights to the new fly wheel if it has holes for weights OR have the NEW Flywheel matched balanced to the old fly wheel. Thats what I did on my 02 ZO6. I had the SPEC Duel Disk flywheel matched balanced to my old fly wheel.. I fired up the engine after mounting the new matched balanced fly wheel and spun it up to 5500 RPMs.. Didn't feel any abnormal vibrations:

-MARK THE POSITION OF THE OLD FLYWHEEL TO WHERE IT MOUNTED ON THE CRANK before you remove it!!!!! It is NOT pined and can be clocked in numerous locations!!!

Use the C6 ZO6 differential parts to make your differential a little more bullet proof.

- C5, ragtopws6 , Upgrading your C5 rear with C6 Z06 guts, : http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-g...-z06-guts.html

- C5, Its_Go_Time, Output Shaft Install - Left and Right: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...post1573407966

The C6 ZO6 parts are MUCH better than the standard C5 stuff!!!

Hope this helps

Yeah I had some damage that was repaired and didn't replace the ring. I guess it was damaged or not setup right. So I pulled the diff and sent the whole thing to RPM and they did it right. I couldn't stand that noise!

Thanks... That's just the info I've been looking for. I am planning to send my RPM trans back for a refresh. I'll be sending the diff with it to have that noise extinguished.

Once again the Forum comes to the rescue.

Default diff and clutch

How did your diff and clutch project come out?

Haven't started the project yet, but did drive it to Scottsdale over the past weekend to the GoodGuys show. Got over 30mpg, but the whine got louder. Will be dropping the diff second week of December I guess

Neither have I, December was supposed to be a slow month at work, but I was working so much, was able to save to have a local shop do the work. Now I leave for work again this week and haven't gotten a chance to schedule the work done, but Rick at RKT56 has my core fee, so there is some progress... 3.90's with some C6Z06 stuff Can't wait!
