Would love to hear your feedback after you get the diff installed with the 3.90 gears as I'm having Rick build a diff for me with 3.90 gears that I'll be having installed the week of the 15th sometime. Along with that is a new cam. I can hardly wait!!!!!
Likewise, I'd like to get your feedback once you get your car back together. What cam are you going with?
BTW, I'm in your neck of the woods and I know a few people in Columbia.

Does it sound like this video? Mine started as a ringing between 50-60mph, and developed into a gear whine. Always at the same speed. I isolated it to the diff by putting on jackstands, and having a helper run it up to speed, while I snoop underneath on a creeper. It was easy to find the source. It was fixed with a new ring & pinion from RPM transmissions.
YES, i have a 02 with 115k miles with SAME noise. this may be a dumb question, but how long did you drive it like that? in other words HOW long do i have before i NEED to replace and and am i in any risk of damage more by normal driving?

Hey Chaplain! Good to see other TN folks here. I'm in Memphis once a quarter or so. I do quite a bit of business with FedEx's aviation guys.
I just got off the phone with Rick @ RKT and it looks like my diff will be ahead of schedule.
I'm going with a streetable cam mid 220s with a large split, .600 lift and a 114+4 LSA. Should be a street friendly cam with great under the curve torque. It looks like I'll have to find a new tire as the Invos don't hold the power now.
Can't wait to hear what the OP has to say about the gear swap. Next time I'm about to head to Memphis I'll shoot you a pm.

Rick is a great addition to the forum! I've pestered him with so many emails and questions he probably hears 20 times a day and he always responds! Got the confirmation and shipping number today.
Mstrahan, if you're getting your diff installed the week of the 15th, you'll be ahead of me, work has been keeping me out of town alot more than I figured and don't know when I'm actually going to be back in town to have the diff installed. I bet your vette is going to rock with that cam though!
I'll be posting a thread the week I get back. I completely understand work being crazy. It seems that the first of the year has brought quite a bit of business right from the start. That sure isn't a bad thing. It helps pay for this C5 addiction that I have.
Good luck with the install!
Got the vette back from the shop this morning! I'm happy I went with 3.90's doesn't seem like its taching all that much more. Only through with 2 of the 5 heat cycles that Rick suggests, but I can tell I made the right decision. The stock gears were pretty bad out of adjustment, there was plenty of "slack", you could turn the ring gear what seemed like quite a bit before feeling the pinion turn.
Also had the Elite Engineering tunnel brace put in, seemed to stiffen things up and make the squeaks a little less, but that could also be because of the new shocks just put in. Can't believe that even with only 58k miles one of the stock ones had no compression left in it!
It's SOOO nice to drive the vette and hear the mufflers rather than the rear end grinding away at itself

Okay I had a new diff put in with 3:42 and everything seems fine until the spring when I pulled my car out of my garage I've been debating I thought it was my fuel pump but I have the same typical problem when I am cruise control at 65or70 i have a loud whining or hum coming from the back. It also seems to make a whine when I come to a stop sign but if I am cruising at 40 miles an hour and put the car in neutral there is no hum no matter what I rev it to
I have a 2003 and I did a new diff at 52800 I I stored the car from November til last month so about 5 months in heated garage after I took it out I drove it for about 40 miles and got some food and then I'm back on the highway with the radio off I could hear a good whine with the cruise control on but if I let go of throttle it stops if I give it throttle I don't hear it if I put in neutral and I don't hear nothing and if I rev It Up in neutral I still don't hear any
I just checked the diff fluid in my garage pretty level and it is still full right under the fill plug. Maybe after sitting for so long and not driven I might just need to do some Figure 8 in the parking lot to open up the pockets
One more thing sorry about my OCD when I tightened fill plug after I torqued:20 I took a regular wrench and tightened little bit more about a half centimeter hopefully I didnt over torque
I have a 2009 Z06 original owner. When i drive and hit a bump I start hearing a whinning sound of the motor rpm, if i turm off the radio and touch any electrical device the sound comes from the radio. I took it to the dealer and they were unable to figure out. This was the first chevy i have ever bought. The noise is similar to what my 1970 VW Bug made when my battery was no good. Replaced battery, still making noise. Love the car hate the noise, has turned me off from ever buying another vette. Any help greatly appreciated.
Any good ALTERNATOR/STARTER Repair shop can easily fix that issue.. Sounds like you have alternator whine. The filtering in the regulator is likely weak or going bad.
That easy to fix. Just have them rebuild the alternator and replace the voltage regulator.
