Default C5 Remote Key Fob compatability question

HI all from the UK
I wonder if someone can help.

I have a 1999 C5 convertible, when I bought it, it came with a key fob which didn't work, and is pretty battered. It has 4 buttons on it.
REd Horn button, lock, unlock, and what looks like a trunk button?
on the back it says the following.....

GM10253839
CANADA 218102108
MODEL / FCC ID AB00216T

A friend of mine, who has sold his ZO6 2003, and bought a C6 has some fobs which have been offered to me if they will work with my car

One has 3 buttons on it (trunk one missing) and one has the 4
details are below.... will these work / be programmed for my car?

3 buttons, is as follows;
GM 15132197
CANADA 109G 12021
MODEL/FCCID; LHJ011

4 buttons, is as follows;

GM/LEAR 25695954
FCC ID; KOBLEAR1XT
CANADA; 3521 102 1718

thanks

IF your car has not been modified to accept later fobs (and tire pressure sensors) by installing a 2001 or newer RFA unit, you need a 97-99 fob. A 2000 fob will work, but the passive function will be missing. You need the same part number as your original. The 97-99 models are not cheap, but you can buy a new one from gmpartshouse.com for around $70 bucks. Even on ebay, used ones are more than that. Don't believe the people who post after this that they bought one on ebay for $20 bucks. They bought the 2001-04 fobs which are very cheap everywhere. Get one with that AB20016T on the back and it will be the right one.

Hi Dex, like you I'm from the UK

The fobs communicate at radio frequency with the RFA which sends the signal to the computer. The RFA is shared with the TPS system.

You dont say if your car is an import or a Euro. Either way a fob for a US 03 won't work with a 99 as the 03 fob works at a different frequency to the 99.

I always understood that a Euro operates at a different frequency to all the US models.

I looked up the part numbers but they seem to be the same:

Euro Export Model: Edit See post #6

From the GMpartshouse site: GM Key FOBS/Transmitters 10253839 – 97-99 – $80.40

Looks like the first fob you mention is the correct one. Have you tried a new battery and a relearn?

BTW are you a CCCUK member?

thanks Guys......

DeeGee - hi yes I'm a cccuk member..

I haven't had an issue not having the key fob to be honest, opportunity to get one was a good idea, and I did see they were quite expensive.

The big reason I really wanted to get one was to get a closure kit for the windows.
As it is a bit of a tight squeeze in the garage when I get out I have to put the window down to get out without putting physical pressure on the window otherwise, then could click and close the windows once I'm out of the car.

the other solution might be to get some sort of aftermarket device to do this?
perhaps this might be a cheaper option?

I have a window valet which opens and closes the windows automatically but you still need a key fob (3 presses). It plugs into the OBD port.

I'll watch out for you on the UK C5 Forum!

I did more digging and it looks like the Euro transmitters don't change between different year models:

If you have a Euro 99 it could be the previous owner bought the fob for a US 99?

Euro key fob: Transmitter R/CON DR LK 10407640

As an aside, its worth filling out your profile as members can then target information specific to your car. Most members here will assume you have a US spec 99 unless you say otherwise. As we know, there are significant differences between US domestic and export Vettes.

Hi Mate
right this is where it gets a bit complicated

I found this out during DVLA removal of a private plate when I bought the car..... it could be US or Euro spec... the first owner of my car was the Saudi Royal family!!
it has reversing lights round the plates as US spec, but it has large rear foglamps as per Euro Spec

like the sound of the window valet system, but as you say still need the fob! presume you can't get an after market one maybe to work, to rule out completely which ones I need?

Wow, royalty in the family!

Check the RPO codes in the glovebox. If its an export it should have a country code:

CU8 Country Code, Saudi Arabia (Export)
CU9 Country Code, England (Export)

The export also has sidelights in the front bumper whereas the US version has parking lights in the front turn signal housing. An export also has a towing ring.
