Thanks for the info on that part number! I have the GM Repair Manual that I got here but it doesn't give the number (or maybe I just didn't look in the right places...??) At least now I can do a more detailed search on eBay. $350 is what they went for new for '99 & '00 models only! $80 on either side of those years for some reason!! LOL

So does the steering sensor effect the actual operation of the vehicle? Or is it like the EBCM whereas the system is inoperable but you can still drive the car. If that's the case, a piece of black duct tape over the DIC and I'd keep on driving. Just pretend it's a C4.

There's a button on the console that allows you to disengage the Active Handling System at any time so YOU CAN DO IT THAT WAY and just deal with the DIC messages every time you start the car...

But if you don't disengage it - when you slow down to make a corner... The sensor tells the car that you're losing control of your car and it begins to apply ONE brake pad at a time depending on your car's direction of travel basically! Say you are making a right corner - it will apply the rear driver's brake to slow you down and turn you into the corner... Then as you turn the wheel left to come out of the turn it applies the passenger front brake... It's to compensate for your OVER-COMPENSATING when you lose control.

EVERY TIME YOU MAKE A CORNER!! And it feels weird - the steering gets stiff and feels like the brakes are sticking for a few seconds... One guy was saying he was hauling *** and it activated the Active Handling and it almost slammed him into the median K rail when he wasn't expecting it... Then DIC tells you to Service Vehicle Soon a few times...

On the other side of that - it also allows both rear wheels to spin so that you can do burn outs or doughnuts, too, sooo...??

If you YouTube - Corvette C5 Active Handling System -- GM Promotional Video - there's a good video animation that shows what the system's doing to save you from yourself!! LOL

It's not like Penny's CHECK ENGINE light that keeps freaking Sheldon out on The Big Bang Theory though... haha... BAZINGA!!

OK so you can still drive it with a failed EBCM and steering sensor and yaw sensor and wheel speed sensors and a lot more I'm guessin? I could also live without TPMS. BTW..TPMS...That always sounds like a female condition to me. Without all that, it would be like my TR8 only MUCH better.

I don't appear to have any of these issues yet but it's good to know I won't have to junk the car if they crop up. It's still the neatest car I ever owned even without all the quirky electronic driver enhancements GM thought we all needed.

Can I assume that if my '98 isn't equipped with Active Handling, I'm immune to some of this aggravation?

DUDE!! You have no idea! At first I was having one battery drain issue after another... I'm a Union Ironworker that bangs on DRUMS for fun besides trying to figure my new SCIENCE PROJECT OUT in my spare time!! First post here I read said:

If you like to tinker - the C5 is for YOU!!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! I do NOT... repeat... NOT LIKE TO TINKER WITH BRAIN SURGERY or...??

Got that solved, got rid of those train rail riding RUN FLATS finally and now THIS?! But I feel 200% EXACTLY LIKE YOU SAID!! It's still the most fun I EVER had with my clothes on and running or parked... I LOOK ****ING COOL!! haha...

Check the list of RPO's for your car. If no JL4 then you do not have AH.
Stupid question number two: where can I find this info on the car?

Thanks!

Default Found new sensor at gm partsdirect.com

ENDANGERED SPECIES but NOT EXTINCT YET!!

http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/results.cfm

OK!! Good News!! Prior to the used sensor that I found earlier on eBay, I have ordered and payed for TWO other sensors at Corvette Specialties and Corvette Parts Worldwide only to find out that the part was, in fact, DISCONTINUED by GM and I'm still waiting on one purchase refund.

However... GM PartsDirect.com claims that they DO HAVE THEM IN STOCK - even had me do a prior confirmation to assure that it was available (photo #2 was the email confirmation) and I just paid for the part in photo #3.

I was going to hurry and cancel my eBay purchase but reconsidered in light of the first two new ones that I paid for but that were never actually available at all. At least this way, I know that I do have one used one in hand and if a new one happens to show up at my door... BONUS!! Then I can try to return the used one, resell it or whatever...??

NOW... That the HARD PART'S OVER!! Are there any REAL MECHANICS out there who might have some advice on installing these bastards for a hard rock drummer with a heavy foot?! John Bonham style, I mean!! LOL

You have to partially remove the steering column but a couple of things to remember:

START WITH THE STEERING WHEEL AND THE WHEELS POINTING STRAIGHT AHEAD!

1. DO NOT pull the black alignment pin on the new sensor until the new sensor is actually installed on the steering column.

2. When you DISCONNECT the steering column from the rack,,, MAKE SURE that you keep the alignment relationship between the steering wheel and rack, (ie DO NOT rotate the steering wheel or move the actual wheel position) "turn wheels left or right" or you you will have SWPS misalignment when you reconnect everything.

Theres a CLOCK SPRING inside the column. It the steering wheel is rotated too far in one direction or the other, it will break the spring. I secure the steering wheel to the column with tape to keep someone from accidentally moving the steering wheel out of zero position.

I have never had an opportunity to dissect a SWPS. I will pay you for shipping if you send me your old one. I'm dieing to see whats inside one. This is how I figure out if there repairable or not and what makes them fail.

Her is an example of what I do when I get a chance to dissect old broken parts:

if you have a '98, you don't have Active Handling... and if you wanted to confirm, you'd look under one of the rear compartment covers in your trunk. There will be a white sticker the size of a playing card on there... take a look and see what your car was ordered/built with.

Wrong! AH became available in mid '98. I purchased a new '98 and at that time I remember looking at cars that had it as an option on the window sticker.

Was this off a salvage car? I was wondering how you would install a used one with no alignment pin. Is there a way to do this?
