When I started removing parts from my blown motor, i noticed it did not have the timing chain guide that bolts right above the crank. Is this plastic guide necessary? for the saftey of the chain?
The shop that installed my cam package before hand must not have reinstalled it then, cause it was not there when i removed my cam from the old motor . Hence why i was asking if it is necessary to have it. I wold prefer to have it but if it is not needed then so be it.
You answered no question, so I am not sure why you are posting.
First of all, I posted because it is an open forum. Second, I was asking the question, because I could not understand why you thought having a chain damper would be detrimental (harmful in some way), or if you meant NOT having a chain damper would be harmful.
If you have the holed in the block for a damper,, your gifted! Most don't. If you have the holes, find a damper and install it!! It provides the chain stability and longevity.

The way it is read, it implies that it is sarcastic in nature.
The motors come from the factory with the Timing chain guide, I was asking if it was needed, ( it guides the chain to the crank sprocket) Mine didn't have one. And detrimental was as in would there be chain slap from the chain not having a guide.
Bill would you happen to have a part number for that guide.

Like Bill said, some were actually fortunate enough to have the block tapped for the damper(not all C5s had it). Some went the distance, and measured, drilled/tapped their blocks. If I recall correctly, the damper supply dried up a couple of years ago.
