Good Luck. You've been given some good advice here.
It really fries me when my wife or two daughters take their cars in for service. A while back one of my daughters was told that her 3,000 mile old air filter needed replacement and that the brakes I had replaced 6,000 miles earlier also needed replacement. Thankfully, she called me and put the guy on the phone...he changed his mind. I told me daughter to get out of there and not give them a dime's worth of business.
Now, they call me before any work is approved and I talk with someone.
Feel free to check in here again if you need advice or feel like someone is taking advantage of you. We'll be glad to help!
yup has happened to me actually a few times before by various places on and other cars. problem is with the other cars the "extra" service i require isnt as much as what they charge for the vette. so i really want to make sure i REALLY need it before i spend the money. i hate places like that! i dont know alot but i do know some stuff. i actually countered with one place and asked them to show me. when they realised i knew what i was talking about, they backed up and said oh the technician was new so he was still learning and just wanted to be cautious. yea right ... i called BS, paid on the service i had asked for and LEFT never to be seen again.

Don't know why no one has stated the obvious so far but if thats you in your sig picture your hot!
Search for a local/close Corvette Club in your area. That would be a good way to meet some folks who can help you learn by watching them work on theirs so you are ahead of the game when something comes up. I'm sure a smile and a free beer can get you all the free help you need. Good luck and I like your positive attitude.

Thats exactly what I was going to recommend. We have a group of buddys / friends and we all have Corvettes. (C4s c5s and C6s)
We all gather at local car shows and events and discuss issues and also make plans on having a CAR COOK OUT. We pick somesones house, bring food and drink and make a day of fixing each others cars. Its also called a MOD PARTY!
You will be surprised at how many people will show up if you have a Mod Party with PIZZA & Beer / Sodas..
Your local EVENTS & REGIONAL. Pacific Northwest, and make a post requesting local area corvette owners to gather and party..
you guys are awesome thank you sooooo much!! hey if someone will take the time to show me what i need to do, hell i'd buy 10 pizzas and a few 30 packs of beer. altho we better work on the cars before we start drinkin! lol
and yes, im joining my local corvette club to see if anyone wants to show me. im gonna learn so next year i might just be able to figure out issues by myself and fix em.
here is the youtube. its crappy though. my neighbor came out to listen to it as well. the aircon was already on so thats what it sounded like with the clicking sound. he said it might be the bearing by the pulley or the compressor. but if the aircon still puts out cold air, might not be compressor, just bad bearing. belts look good from what i could see.
It sounds like the compressor engaging and disengaging, I beleive it kicks on and off even when heat is being called for. Nothing sounds out of the ordinary, if it were a bearing trust me you would know. The valve train on these cars are said to be noisey too, kind of like a sewing machine noise. Enjoy

true but that was a new sound. she didnt sound that rought before. its a def clicking sound. i wish my neighbor hadnt come out cuz i would have turned it on and off so it would have been more distinctive. u can def hear it and i hadnt heard it before so thats why i was worried.
The loud click now and then is the compressor kicking in and out, but the video sounds crappy in other ways. It's hard to tell anything. Can you do another recording?
Did they change the compressor clutch action on different cars? The compressor on my car never cycles off and on when idling unless I turn off it off with the controls. I have the auto controls and the compressor is on if it's in auto mode or if it's in manual mode and the defrost is set or if it's set to dash or floor and the AC button is pressed.
It does kick off by itself above 4895rpm and then it kicks back on below 4545rpm.

yea the sound is really crappy ... k ill do another recording ... ill have it turned off ... than turn it on. i dont know, its a new sound thats why i was worried that something might be going.
i dont know if this one is better, but man i dont know, it sounds rough as soon as i turn on the a/c. i dont think its normal, but hell, if it is it means i dont have to spend $ so i hope it is fine, but it sounds hella rough!

Ya, that is not at all normal. You have a problem with the compressor. Its not the A/C idler or tensioner because they always spin the same way regardless of A/C on or off. Its the compressor clutch or bearing most likely. Something to do with the engagement of the compressor.

CRAP!!! Thats a $300 part if its the compressor and I cant install that myself! Sigh ... FML! I just read that it could cost up to $1200 to replace and install by a shop. DOUBLE CRAP!!!!!

Reason: adding
The compressor should not be bad at 50k miles. My car has about 150k miles and I'm pretty sure it has the original compressor and clutch. I did have a leak fixed and the tech listened to it with a stephoscope and said it still sounded good. I can't look at YouTube here but I'll take a look at home.
It is a pricy part if it is bad. But you can change it at home and then you get it vacuumed out and recharged.
I just watched the video. That does sound like a terminal AC compressor. I'd be surprized if that's a pulley or the clutch. Watch the pulleys and belt see if everything run straight and true or if there is something bouncing and/or wobbling. Best to keep the AC off until you figure that one out. The compressor will be shredding little aluminum bits throughout the AC system if it's failing and that can lead to more $$$ to fix.

sigh. well needless to say, its an expensive problem and i cant fix it myself even if i wanted to. i would need someone to guide me. i read changing it out is not a job for an amateur and im using that term lightly for me cuz im worse! lol
