Default 02 z06 trans problems

Without any abuse, the z06 I just bought is already dishing out problems..
Driving it "normal", its getting were when you get a few miles up the road it gets were it wont go in any gear but 4th once your get there. It will go to nuetral, but no other gear until you slow way down and itll go in 2nd. When you bump it out of gear where nuetral should be, It has a slight grind like its barely trying to go into another gear. If I move it over to where 5th should be and apply pressure it slowly moves forward but never goes into gear..
After you let the car sit for awhile, it will drive fine again for a few miles. The cap is stuck for me to check fluid, but the clutch pressure feels fine. Almost like it already has a tick master.. Ive never had a car do this. It also just started grinding in 3rd before this started if that helps to diagnose.

I wonder if the shifter has lost its alignment with the shift box.

How would I check/realign? I just drove it around a bit today and skipped 3rd and 4th with no problems.. a vette without 3rd and 4th gets annoying.

Here is a procedure for changing out the shifter, useful to see how it's accessed. Page 8 shows the shifter/box relationship.

In the stock shifter, there's a small right-angle tool at the front of the shifter that can be placed into the shift linkage forward of the shift box to lock the linkage in neutral. Use this when aligning and tightening down the shifter, so the linkage doesn't move on you. Just remember to pull this out and return it to the front of the stock shifter when done.

Disassembly, alignment/tightening, and reassembly shouldn't take but an hour with experience, perhaps two without. Holler with questions, of course.

Having said all this, I welcome others' thoughts on potential causes. Two hours is still a decent investment just to verify a theory. If others have better ideas that can be checked with less effort, please help uselessracing out.

ever had any clutch issues? Could be heating up and clutch is not disengaging all the way making shifting impossible. If your slave is messed up and the rest of your hydraulics are contaminated, this could be the problem.

I would expect that if it was an alignment or trans issue, you wouldn't experience normal operation when its cold.

I just re-read your post and if you are having clutch issues and its even not fully engaging, this would explain the excess heat after a short drive.

If you shift into a high gear at a low speed and floor it, does the clutch slip at all?

This sounds reasonable, but why would 4th still work fine? I would have thought all the gears would exhibit the same symptoms if it were the clutch. I'm not saying it's not the clutch--just curious.

You most likely have a clutch disengagement issue. You need to see if you have any leaks and make sure the clutch fluid is full and clean.

Before you spend thousands on a clutch, make sure that your master cylinder is working correctly.

If I were you I would do what it takes to bleed and flush your slave/master.

I would start by checking your fluids....

I really dont think its the clutch. I just bought the car last week so I havent had much chance to figure it out. But it didnt do any of this on the test drive, OR the 200 mile trip home.. But after driving it today skipping 3rd(because of grinding), and skipping 4th(because of it getting stuck), it did fine.. And the clutch doesnt slip at all. Its a spec stage 2.

I really need to check/change fluids, I just havent had time. I was just wondering if there were any common problems with these. Its my first vette. Ive built several high hp ls motors, but corvettes are a whole differnt breed of drivetrain than Im used to.

I TOO HAVE A spec DUEL DISK CLUTCH..

IT does not work properly with AIR in the hydraulic system system! Trust me! That would be the FIRST place I would look!

I was just stating that I dont think its slipping, not that the spec or hydraulics was or wasnt my problem. Hopefully I will get a break from working o/t this week I can check it out. I plan on bleeding the clutch and trying to align the shifter. If that doesnt work, Ill move on to changing fluids. Im not sure how this alignment will work with the aftermarket HURST, but I will find out. ALSO Im not sure what master is in the car, but I have a Tick master from an fbody. Will this fit the vette if I take the aluminum block off? The "turnbuckle" looked as if it may be longer..?? Thanks for all your help!!

Yes!

As has already been mentioned, the clutch hydraulic system is the weak link, unless meticulously maintained.

I guess reading so much about the aluminum shift fork they started in 02 has got me freaked out.. I REALLY dont wanna have to go into the trans right now. I really hope it is in the hydraulics.

Trust me,, If the clutch has AIR in it,, it wont SLIP but will grind and shift horribably! Been there,, DONE THAT!!

If you have a TICK Master, you also have to make sure that its adjusted properly. The lock nuts could have backed off and you may not have enough throw..

At least check out the clutch hydraulics and adjustment. The BENT SHIFT FORKS, is a myth. Never seen one. If you bend a shift fork,, you were using your FEET to shift!! For the TRUTH,, contact Rick at

lol @ the feet comment.. It just made sense to me I guess because all the rebuilt kits come with steel "viper" forks. If its a myth, then It would have to be in the hydraulics. I dont think the trans could have went bad over night without any abuse.. but idk.
I just looked and it doesnt have an adjustable master in it. Im just wondering if I can make the fbody master I have fit. Im going to try everything suggested here. If all else fails, I will contact Rick.

OK. So I took the car to town tonight to take my daughter trick or treating, and the car did fine for the whole night. On my road(almost to my driveway) it officially got "stuck" in 3rd and wouldnt come out at all. Even after shutting the car off it wouldnt come out. After fighting with it for awhile to get it in reverse to back it in my drive, it wouldnt come out of reverse. Its getting stuck in every gear you put it in now. And its HARD to get it out. I still havent had a chance to bleed it due to it being so late when I get off, but the clutch fluid it full.

If you can't pull it out of gear even with the car off, it sounds like the weight of the car is keeping it from coming out of gear. This means that the clutch is not disengaging all the way. What I would do is put it on a flat surface and barely jack up the rear wheels just enough where they are off the ground. Then try to get it out of gear and see what happens.

I just did this. AND bled the clutch.

With the car OFF, it will go into first(with force and a clunk), second is fine, third is fine now, fourth is not happening(feels like theres a solid plate stopping it), fith is fine, sixth is fine.. Reverse is almost impossible also but will go with a few minutes of coaxing..

Remove the BOOT from around the shifter, remove the rubber close out boot and make sure that the shift box is properly and firmly attached to the torque tube.

If there is any thing wrong with the shift box, it will cause problems similar to what your seeing. The shift box should NOT move when you shift.
