Default cant drive the car HELP

ok so the run down is. this girl took her car to the dealership and they thought it might be the BCM.
she's telling me that it will idle all day long, but once u try to drive it the car cuts off. also the the radio stays on, and once the keys out that the door still dings.

I told her I think its the steering wheel sensor, but id hate to steer her wrong. I figured yall guys knew more about it

the car is a 2001 6 speed with 80,xxx miles on it.

also do they still make the sensor kit or is there a bypass kit for the steering wheel issue

Firstly, it is very difficult to diagnose a problem without the codes. So, it is very important to know what codes her DIC is giving her.

Secondly, a very common cause of electronic issues is bad grounds. I would recommend that all of the car's ground points be checked and cleaned.

Security cuts off the fuel at 2mph, bet the column lock is your problem. AND yes, there is a bypass for the lock. Read the sticky at the top of the tech section on the column lock.

Is she checking the codes properly?



Corvette C5 Codes

To list your codes, turn the ignition key to the ON position, but don't start the engine. Clear any present DIC messages (like Door Ajar, or Service Steering Column) by pressing the RESET button. Then hold the OPTIONS button down, while pressing the FUEL button 4 times. This will get you into the CODES section of the DIC.
The computer will automatically display all the codes your car is or has created. It will cycle through each code every 3 seconds. You can watch it display codes for every module in your car. If you want to write them down, go ahead. Any code that ends in H is a history code - something that has occurred in the past but is fine now. The computer is very sensitive and would throw a code if you turned the radio off while tuning it.
Once the computer has finished going through all of it's automatic codes, press RESET to enter Manual Configuration. It should start with a module and show "NO CODES" or "# CODES". If it shows a number of codes, press and hold RESET until it displays "NO CODES".

READING YOUR Engine Diagnostic Codes (DTCs)
The Diagnostic Display Mode is entered with the following procedure:
1) Turn on the ignition but don't start the engine.
2) Press the RESET button to turn off any warning messages. (i.e. door open, trunk open etc…)
3) Press and hold OPTIONS
4) While holding OPTIONS, press FUEL four times within a 10-second period.

Initially, on-board diagnostics go into an Automatic Mode which shows diagnostic codes in a pre-set sequence: PCM - TCS - RTD - BCM - IPC - RADIO - HVAC - LDCM - RDCM - SCM - RFA. All codes will be displayed for each. ( i.e. PCM = 4 codes)
If none are present in a given module, you will see No More Codes on the display.
There are two kinds of diagnostic codes, Current and History designated with a letter suffix, C or ;H. A current code indicates a malfunction is present in the module displaying data. A history code indicates a problem existed sometime in the last 40 or 50 ignition cycles. When not accompanied by a current code of the same number, it's potential evidence of a previous problem, now resolved, that was not removed by clearing the codes.
More likely it's an indication of an intermittent malfunction.
Intermittent codes are the most challenging of the diagnostics. An intermittent code may have happened once, may have happened more than once but is inconsistent or may be happening on a regular basis but not at the time the codes are displayed. History codes can also be caused by a current malfunction in a system that is not operating at the time codes are displayed. An example is the rear window defogger which doesn't operate until the Body Control Module detects engine rpm. For history codes set by a module that does not operate with the key on and engine off, a special diagnostic tool called a Scan Tester is necessary to properly diagnose the malfunction.
Once the system has displayed all modules, it goes into the manual mode which allows selection of each module using combinations of Driver Information Center buttons. Manual mode can also be entered during the automatic sequence by pressing any button except E/M. Once the display shows Manual Diagnostics, select a module by pressing the OPTIONS button to go forward or the TRIP button to go back. Once a module is selected, a code is displayed, and if more than one are present;
press GAGES to go forward or FUEL to go back.
To exit the diagnostic mode at any time, press E/M. If you want to erase codes in a given module, press RESET
To reset the codes once in manual mode, press and hold RESET until it displays NO CODES Press OPTIONS to go to the next module. Repeat the steps until you have reset the codes in all the computer modules.
NOTE!! Only reset the codes IF you want to - it is NOT necessary to do this. Clearing a code does not repair a problem. You are simply erasing the evidence of it in the module's memory. If you clear the code/s, and extinguish the Check Engine Light, your emissions status ready will NOT allow you to pass an emissions test until you have completed the required driving cycles.
Once you have the codes, the next question is: What to do with the information?
First, consult the factory service manual. Any serious C5 Do-It-Yourself owner should invest in the Corvette Service Manual of the appropriate model year. The Service Manual is really a requirement if you want to understand and work on your C5.

Dealerships can't be bothered doing any real diagnostics. They just take a quick look and pick the most likely suspect and replace it. They don't care if it doesn't fix the problem, it's not their money they're spending on parts.

So, as already requested about 4 or 5 times. Post the codes.

It almost sounds like 2 separate issues, however I could also see both of those problems possibly being caused by the ignition switch.

I agree,, the battery MUST be fully charged and the terminals properly torqued in place 11 ft/lbs

Read the DTCs, write them down and CLEAR THEM!! Try to drive it. If it fails again,, recheck the DTCs and post those!!!!! Those will be the ones that tell the story.

Most likely its just a Column Lock issue. 8vette7 will most likely take the lead on this after you post the DTCs. He's the CL go to guy!

The STEALERSHIP would just LOVE to replace your BCM! Easy and expensive!!!
I seriously doubt that its the issue BUT,,,,,,,,,,,, it very well could be.. Just saying..... The DTCs will tell the truth!

Thanks guys, ive been tryin to get the codes. like I said before its not my car, im tryin to help a friend out. ill pass this info on. hopefully get yall some codes

The best help you can do for your friend is to go get the car from the dealership before they spend more of her money experimenting on finding a fix.

I did, she got it outa there. but cant find away to bring it to me. she has another shop looking at it, but they haven't figured it out yet either. lol.

Exactly what happens when she tries to drive the car? Does the engine die immediately, or can she drive around for a while before it quits?

Have the repair facility CLEAR ALL THE DTCs using the DIC! Then see if the Column Lock will work.

If the car has the GM K harness, it could very well be defective, Have the shop remove it and connect the CL Harness back up as it was from the factory.

Here is what the K Harness looks like:



Its under the dash below the steering column. You have to remove the close out panel and the drivers KNEE BOLSTER to get to it.

The radio staying on and the key chime still sounding with the key out and door open makes me think it's more than just a column lock issue.
