Are there any cam choices that make more power, but don't lose any off-idle torque when compared with say a stock LS6 cam? Is there such thing as a free lunch here? Let's assume emissions aren't a factor.

There are many factors to consider. If the car is a manual or an auto that will not be seeing a converter, it would need to keep a low duration. But you could always take a cam with similar duration and operating range to the LS6 cam that has higher lift and a lower LSA. You would operate basically the same, but have more power from the greater lift, and more torque from the LSA being shortened a few point.
If an auto is going to have a high stall. You can go up much higher in all areas and still have a perfectly streetable, low end power setup.
It cannot be stressed enough, when you hear the saying "It's all in the tune", believe it, IT'S ALL IN THE TUNE! To get all or most of the hiccups out sometimes it takes several hours of street tuning to get great drivability.
After living with my first "cam from hell" I cannot tell you how I have enjoyed the stock like drivability with this one. Find a GOOD tuner willing to spend the time and I bet your problems will go away.
Well if anyone can recommend a good tuner in Tampa, I am all ears.
I recently added a texas speed 224/228 with 112 LSA and hand ported a set of 241 heads with headers and a cold air intake. below 2500 rpm it may have lost a little bit of torque from stock but from 2500-5500 there is over 350ftlb at the rear wheels with a peak of 380ftlb at 4800 rpm and peak power 390rwhp at 6300 rpm. It is a great street cam cruising around in 6th gear from 55mph on. I can pull away from a stop the same as I did with the stock cam. For the street I wouldn't go any bigger than that. The 220R or 224R may even be a better selection for you. Hope this helps
Matt
Thanks Matt. The Tuner I am using now (we spoke for a long time today) says he doesn't recommend I change cam or heads with a high mileage motor and sub 30 oil psi. Stall may have been a stock converter the original owner re-stalled So much misinformation it's not even funny.
You are welcome! The car is pretty fun. Will be interesting to see if my tuna freind can wring some more out of it when we get it on the dyno.
Put your car in instantaneous fuel economy read out and watch how bad it gets when the converter is stalling. It will surprise you even at light throttle. I bet it costs 3mpg easy.
