Hello, All. I've been researching a clutch change on a 2003 Z06, completely stock right now. Future might include either a AA supercharger, or just head porting, intake, cam, and exhaust. But nothing is definite. I'm leaning towards the Monster 12" stage 2, and I see they offer a lite, steel billit 18# flywheel. How does this compare to the fidanza 13# aluminum flywheel offered by GMPH. The use of the car will still be mainly a daily driver, with hopefully a few trips to hpde or a drag strip, but not often. Would the 18# steel flywheel hold up better than the 13# aluminum, or would it be best to stay with the standard 28# billit? My biggest concern is to increase clutch pedal effort as little as possible. Monster claims only an 8% increase in pedal effort for the stage 2, which I can live with. Thanks in advance for your wise opinions.
I have driven an aluminum and currently have a Textralia billet steel that is 18 lbs. I find the Textralia to be street friendly but I have the X-Grip disc, not the more aggressive Z-Grip. When I drove a friends aluminum flywheel car it revved much faster but was a little trickier at the stop lights. He didn't have an aggressive disc though.
If you get a very lumpy cam, the aluminum may be too much for street driving. If you know anyone who has one, I would really recommend to try before you buy as an unfriendly clutch will totally take away the fun of driving the car.
I have decent Cam and AA Sc kit, ACT single disk clutch with their AL FW which i think it was 15 lbs...............i will never go back to 28 lbs steel FW period. However if you dont go over 22X on intake and 23x on Ex and not less than 116 LSA of Cam....with SC kit and Al FW......i tell ya you will love it.
I have the 18lb flywheel with my stage 2 monster kit. Pushing 450rwhp and it drives almost like stock, just a few more rpms to get it moving than before.
I have the fidanza 12.7 lb flywheel and notice barely any difference at all. Still can take off from practically idle releasing the clutch no problems.
There are a lot of factors to consider ie overall clutch weight, weight of the vehicle, gearing, friction material to how a car will drive besides the fact of a persons experience of driving a car with a 3rd pedal. After running an aluminum flywheel previously with 3 different friction materials(organic, ceramic and kevlar) previously all of which warped the steel insert. Our 18lb billet flywheel offers less to weight to free up some power to the wheels from less parasitic drivetrain loss and allow the engine to rev match easier. Being this is a vette it's light with good gearing and as long as it isn't your first manual trans car then I think you will like it combined with the Level 2 disc. After a couple of times driving it, it'll become second nature I'm sure of the little bit more throttle you have to give it when taking off only because it doesn't store as much energy. Don't hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have.
