I came back to the thread after recommending it to another member elsewhere and found the older pics were gone. I reuploaded them through Imgur and hope they will last another few years!

I guess we finally know. If you happen to come back to the thread here late like have, can you share what DID work on the earlier HUD / Cluster combo? The description made it sound as though the right-side fuel / temp / pressure displays were disabled.
That, to me, is interesting.... as I find those displays useless and would love to remove them from view.
What worked was the speedometer, the option displayed on the screen at the time, the dimmer and the up/down button. What didn't work was the option button to select what displays on the HUD. Sometimes when you turned the ignition key on the HUD would randomly change what was being displayed too. Certainly worth changing out the cluster when doing this upgrade.
It's funny but was just about to do a HUD install and noticed the pictures had been removed a couple days ago and couldn't find anything for reference except for low res versions still cached in google images. Was just going to PM you to see if you still had the pics, thanks.

I'd say you got lucky.
I wish image host sites would retain the imaged longer. I've been through 2 prior sites in the past few years already. With luck, Imgur will hold out. But then I also often wonder why the various car Forums don't enable hosting for members so that such information is not lost to time - which has happened SO MANY TIMES when I go looking for some obscure fix or upgrade.
