I recently took my 2000 Coupe in to the dealer for service before I put it up for the winter months here in Mo. When I went to pick it up he stated that the Tech had noticed that the Harmonic Balancer had a slight wobble in it and that I should think about having it replaced. The car just turned 70,000 miles and when I got home I looked at it, it has a VERY SLIGHT wobble but nonetheless it does wobble. Is this really necessary or is their a good fix ?
My 98 vert had 64000 miles when I noticed the balancer had a slight wobble. The first really cold day approx. 10 degrees the rubber separated from the ring on the balancer, did no damage, but I would replace it as its going to go sooner or later.
The wobble is just an indication that the rubber is separating. The real problem is when the outer ring actually separates and the ring slips on the hub and slides forward or rearward.
Like 8VETTE7 stated,, The outer ring will slide rearward and grind a hole in the front cover or slide forward and possibly damage the steering rack housing. It will also start shredding and throwing the serpentine belt also.
I have a 2002 coupe and noticed my balancer was wobbling. The forum offered many options but I went with aftermarket power bond balancer. Not real hard if you have a balancer puller and installer. Auto zone has all the tools especially the torque wrench that will get 250 lbs ft. Please don't use the balancer bolt to install the balancer, you'll screw up the threads in the crank. This is also a great opportunity to change your AC and serpentine belt both pulley and tensioners while you got it all apart. Good luck
Agree with above posts..
Mine started the "C5 Wobble" Dance at 92k.
I used a replacement oem gm balancer... But there are
better aftermarket ones out there to choose from.
