Im doing the same thing next week or so, let me know how yours goes. I understand the o rings should be changed, but GMparts said not available? Do you know where to get them?

As I mentioned in a similar thread here, you'll need to transfer the A4 diff adapter plate from the old to the new diff.
Here's the adapter plate I transferred from my 2.73 diff to my 3.42 diff a few years ago. It's held in essentially by the O-ring so it's not pressed in with a lot of force. You should replace the large, outer O-ring and shaft seal while it's out.
This is the large seal plate O-ring at Cultrag. Good idea to have a spare incase yours is trashed during the swap.
Keep in mind the point by feeder82, if you don't get the PCM reprogrammed, shift points will not be right, most noticeable at full throttle.
I am thinking that 3.42 was not a factory option for the A4 and if that is the case, a dealer will not have the reprogram available. You would have to go to a shop that has the knowhow to create new shift points at part and full throttle.
In my case, for a new 3.73 gear set, A&A Corvette in Oxnard CA got the job done.

Thanks alot, I found a sharp mechanic that thinks the Hypertech tuner would do the job, now Im having second thoughts. I think I need to find a shop, hopefully much closer than AA, although, I know there great.
Got any ideas of a shop in northern Ca, like Redding,
Chico or even Sacramento?
