Default Hurst Install - Finished - Not Thrilled

Well, I must be the only one, but I am far less than thrilled with the Hurst Shifter.

I am going to tear it apart tomorrow and see if I can make it better.

As SOON as I started the car, I noticed a great deal more engine noise. I assume this is because the closeout boot doesn't fit as well?

I am going to get some dynamat or some kind of insulation in there to try and deaden the noise. Heck, I'd stuff it with WASHRAGS if I thought they wouldn't catch on fire...

Anyone else done anything like this?

Shifting is tight, but short. I'm going to pull the springs and lighten them up tomorrow. Overall, shifting is good - that is not my problem. However, as I pulled back into the garage tonight, I ran over one of my loose springs - so I'll have to be creative in loosening it up.

My other problem is the shifter rattling. NOISY. Almost never quiet. I can't really see me keeping this shifter installed at this point.

I love the way it shifts, but I don't want the noise. My car is sounding like a 73 Nova stripped to the sheet metal for drag racing instead of a 50k supercar!

I had a Hurst on my 93 Cobra Mustang and it only rattled at WOT near the top of the rpm range. I considered the Hurst one of the best mods I ever made on that car, for day to day enjoyment.

I don't feel that way about the C5 billet shifter right now.

Tom, I curious as to where the engine noise is coming from. What did you do with that big piece of rubber that bolts down on four studs right over the shifter? This should keep it as quite as stock.

The rattling. Which **** do you have on? I have tried different ***** on my Ripper. Just put on a Momo, and now I know why most guys report they don't vibrate. A rubber "sleeve" goes over the top of the shifter that the **** then slides down over. It is because they are a universal fit (not threaded). I had been against a Momo because I always thought I wanted a **** that threaded on. But now I think the rubber sleeve is what keeps it from vibrating

Thanks for your thoughts and input.

Jim

 I'm using the lightest springs, no stops, vette essentials short boot. Didn't notice any more noise but then I can't hear much over my tires anyway.

I did this install a couple of weeks ago. So far, I don't have any additional noise. What shift **** did you use? I put on the stock **** and still, no additional noise.

Did you tighten the shifter down to 10lbs of torque? Did you adjust the stops? Perhaps that's where your noise is coming from?

Tom, I am surprised by your post. Have you not read the tons of posts on this forum about the Hurst? If you did, you would know this is not the norm. Most of us enjoy a precise shifting shifter, that feels "right" in our hand. The noise, if you have been reading, varies from none to quite a bit, and almost all of it was dependant on which **** a person was using. I had a billet aluminum **** on mine and it was absolutlely quiet. I changed to the Delrin Hardbar because I liked the look of it and now my shifter rattles under WOT. I can live with it. With over 95% of people posting positive feedback, can the majority be that wrong about the shifter?

Mines really quite. The stock **** made all the noise and once it was replaced things sounded much better.

If this is any consolation my shifter was pretty loud at first but over time it got quieter. I cannot even hear it now. Of course it could be that my exhaust has gotten louder.

I love Hurst with Hardbar ****. It made a little noise under power but I understand it is a solid metal piece. That is what makes it precise is deleting the gummy rubber stock unit that detaches you from the vehicle. I backed out the stops so they wouldn't rattle while puching on the shifter under throttle. Hope you get it settled.

Try yanking the shift **** off completely and driving the car. I am hoping to install mine in the next few days. Let us know how you make out.

Good suggestion, I will try it - but I think the (STOCK) shifter **** is on pretty well. I tightened it down pretty good and then went on around tighter until the demon key lined up

Tom, I am surprised by your post. Have you not read the tons of posts on this forum about the Hurst?
Heck yeah, it is part of the reason I bought one... That and the fact that I have had 3 other Hurst shifters on my cars in the past.

I expected a little rattle under WOT, but nothing like this.

Most of us enjoy a precise shifting shifter, that feels "right" in our hand.
I love the way it shifts (although I would like to loosen it up a little, but that shouldn't be a big problem.

I wonder if the individual car could be a factor. Maybe I have a less than perfect balance somwhere in the drivetrain to begin with and this is amplifying it? I'm just Wild-A-Guessing here.

I had a billet aluminum **** on mine and it was absolutlely quiet. I changed to the Delrin Hardbar because I liked the look of it and now my shifter rattles under WOT. I can live with it. With over 95% of people posting positive feedback, can the majority be that wrong about the shifter?

You never know I guess. The majority of the world thought that the earth was flat once... However, until today I would have fit into the majority of folks who thought the Hurst was golden.

I do recall one post here from a tuner that said he had three re-installs of the stocker scheduled. All I know is that I have experience with Hurst shifters and I have never had this much noise from one. I'll work with it today and see what happens...

For many of us the Hurst was noisey. I cured my rattles/buzzes with a new ****. Bought the MGW Gripper. That makes the Hurst sit even lower and only at max RPM's does it make ANY noise but by then who cares it's time for another gear.

Try a new ****. Good luck.

I do not know about the Hurst shifter but I filled my billet shift **** with clear silicone before I threaded it down on the B&M shifter. I have absolutely no rattle. As several others have said already most cases of rattle comes from the shift ****, using silicone makes it quiet and it's no problem removing it later.

mine makes no noise... and I did not notice any extra noise in the car... I used the light outer spring on the drivers side and the heavy outer spring on the passenger side....shifts perfect...

My Hurst shifter rattles like you wouldn't believe sometimes. It's either because I'm driving at too low of an RPM at too high of a gear of just punching it pretty hard. Then again, the tailpipes have been cut off and the mufflers are directly behind the seats....

It gets VERY loud. I love it. :smash:

Pictured here, though kinda hard to see:

Well, I'm back from Lowes with sound deadener and after lunch I'm going to rip into it again and try to quiet things down a bit.

I'll let you all know how it turns out...
