Default Ignition Switch Loose

I bought a 2004 Z06 a couple of months ago & noticed today when I put the key in that the ignition switch is loose. I can move it around a little with my fingers. Is there a nut behind the dash I can tighten without removing the bezel or do I need to remove the bezel & investigate further? FYI, I've removed one before, so I know how to do that.

The LOCK CYLINDER inside the actual ignition switch housing is a little loose by design. The cylinder is secured by a set of groves inside the lock housing and the cylinder can be released when the switch is in the ON/RUN position by depressing the small TAB on the side of the cylinder.

The actual switch is secure to the dash frame by TWO machine screws. You have to take the dash trim off to access those bolts.

Are you having issues with the switch??

The cylinder does nothing but turn a slot at the end of the lock housing once you have the correct KEY to allow the lock cylinder to rotate to the different positions.

The VATs key chip reading sensor is attached to the end of the key cylinder and sometimes that can get a little loose. Check that.

Bill

The whole assembly has quite a bit of play & the plastic ring around it is loose as well. I probably need to take the bezel off and see if the screws are loose. The key seems to be turning okay except the last time I started it up, it did catch a little before turning to the start position.

Okay, I removed the bezel & it appears to me that the plastic ring that has the lettering, OFF, ACC, etc. is supposed to hold the lock cylinder to a degree. The plastic ring on mine is completely loose & looks like on the back that it might have some glue residue on it. When I push it against the lock clyinder & hold it there, then the lock cylinder is stable & not moving around. Am I looking at this correctly or not?

That part sounds damaged.

Contact Marc at VETTENUTS. He's a forum sponsor that has LOTs of good used C5 / C6 parts.

He will have a good one that you can use and will fit correctly.
