I've owned a 2001 conv. since new. During the last couple of years the trunk lid has become increasingly harder to open because there is not enough room to put your fingers in to lift the lid. Would new trunk lid struts help?
New trunk struts would help if you have to hold it open after you have dug your nails in to open it in the first place. If it stays open, order the spring from corvettemods.com.
There's a spring on the latch that is supposed to be strong enough to lift the trunk lid about an inch when the solenoid is actuated because the gas springs don't do much at the closed angle.
Here's the spring and latch with the cover removed and the trunk open:
Check the spring to make sure it isn't broken or too weak to be in the position shown. The old original grease in the latch becomes dirty and dries up causing the parts to bind. Try cleaning the latch assembly with solvent and apply new grease such as Mobil 1 to the moving parts. It's a good idea to do the same with the parking brake handle assembly and hood latches since the grease in those is almost two decades old as well.
Go to the local hardware store and buy two springs that are 1.5" long. Cut the ends off so you can feed the spring onto the shaft of the shock. The springs open the deck lid and won't rattle when closed because the springs are compressed. Cheap and completely out of the way. Cost about $5.00.
