To be super clear: on the street, you are hitting and maintaining for minutes (or longer) the upper RPM ranges (5000+ RPM) and 250F+ temperatures? Like, you're just sitting there, cruising, near redline, for a while, regularly?
Yeah, if you're gonna do that, I'd recommend you follow GM's recommendations for track use. Change your oil very frequently, drive with a quart overfilled (and get a catch can), and probably use a heavier weight oil to ensure you have adequate PSI / shear strength at very high temps. You may even want to consider a racing oil (like the 300V stuff.)
I'd recommend if you do that, give your car the full track treatment. Get a fatter radiator, get big fans, get an oil cooler, strongly consider a power steering cooler, wrap everything near your headers in some sort of heat-reflection wrap, strongly consider a diff and trans cooler, and change your fluids constantly.
This is very expensive.
If on the other hand you're merely going for some spirited runs once in a while, and you're not hitting and maintaining high temps, the standard setup will work fine.
Oil temps will reach up 230-245 max, at least when i can look.
No track. Street yes but lots of spirited/backroad driving and im talking straight line for miles.
The $15-20 extra it costs for the amsiol oil change its probably worth your peace of mind. That being said I am switching to Rotella T-6 in my track car this season. I have a full dry sump system, 3 filters, a pre-oiler, huge oil cooler, and reservoir in my oiling system. My reservoir holds 15qts.
I track my car a couple of times a year and use Amsoil Zrod 10/30. I found that it holds oil pressure much better when hot than Mobil 1. It’s also higher in Zinc and phosphorus than Mobil 1. The spec for ZRod is SJ which is the spec that C5’s came with. The newer SM spec has a lot less Zinc Phosphorus than the SJ spec. The newer SM oils don’t have the protection of the older oil because they are made to better protect the converters. Change it once a year and run an extra quart for track events. I’d rather pay a little extra for the wear protection.

<250 is no issue at all for a modern synthetic oil. I do cool downs if I hit 300* but only change the oil once per season based on testing by my mechanics race team ran. They tested the oil content after each race and found that the detergents in new oil lead to more wear than leaving the oil in for the full season. (one car ran the same amsoil the full season, the other changed if they exceeded *300) These are dedicated track cars so not really apples to apples but needless to say I only change my oil once per season now. I generally do 8-10 events per year with 4-8 on track sessions per event that range from 15-30min per session depending on the track. This is all before the new set up but I will stay on the 1x per season interval.
About the membership for Amsoil. It is $20 a year and this entitles you to a discount from retail price on their products. It has been my experience that I can just about get the $20 back after purchasing oil for two vehicles. I use it in 3 of my four vehicles and will also put it in the fourth when it is due. I also switched to Amsoil trans and diff fluid in the Vette. Plus I live 5 miles from the factory so I go to their retail outlet store to buy it. I am happy with all their products.
My driving habits would put supertech to the real test. lol
My car is not used for weekends.
Are weekdays harder on oil...?
Im not recommending super tech, though I do doubt it would cause a problem.
Why aren’t you happy with Mobil one? Admittedly, I’ve never been on a track, but I’ve just never thought “I’m not happy with this oil brand”. And I do use super tech in my pos s10 daily driver

I saw that and don't know the outcome if I try this oil. I pay easy $60 for to gallons of mobile 1 and wix filter. I can get a tad cheaper online but since I daily my C5, the oil change can happen at any moment even when I'm tired of putting in gas twice a day just for short easy drives. That makes me see the $$ flying away lol
The cost of oil is not the problem, I am just looking for the next best thing to move onto.
was never impressed wtih Mobil1...their 15/40 isnt bad but it seems to break down fast. After a few thou ( change ever 3k even if "its a waste) the oil pressure seems to drop some too watery for me.
Amsoil makes a good product. Think about how much a motor costs....or if one buys a "Cheep" aftermarket cam with a crappy core better buy the good stuff youll need it
You just guessing the oil is breaking down because your oil pressure gauge says so?? 🤦*♀️ The misinformation on the web is astounding. FYI, I ran the same Mobil 1 synthetic (15/40) for an entire season in my race car with out losing the viscosity or lubrication properties. I had a day at chuckwalla where I had to do cool down laps due to 300* oil. It was 100+ out and 120+ on the track. Oil samples came back fine. With over 800 track miles with normal driving in the 4-8k range all 800miles. I will still stand behind amsoil is better but please don’t spew garbage based on gauge that was probably well within normal ranges.

Anyhow, i been on bobistheoil.com for a long while and seen results with pennzoil ultra platinum being similar to amsoil. I have 2 gallons coming in and its going to be interesting to try.
