Alternators
Simple question. Can I take my 2002 alternator and put it in my 1999? In other words, are they the same? My 99's alternator seems to be toast and if I can use my 02's alternator I will and then upgrade my 02's alternator to an aftermarket one for higher amperage as my electrical system is highly modified.

Have your alternator rebuild by an alternator / starter rebuild shop. It will be good as new.
The C5 (especially the early ones) have a lower output alternator than the newer C5s. There is something in the PCM that will complain if you up-grade to a megawatt aftermarket alternator. I herd that you can change it with EFI LIVE or HP-Tuners but, I am not sure how or even if it really can be done. I'm sure someone will add the required info.
Also,,, Our GM C5 Valero alternators look the same as any GM same Series alternators BUT,,,,,,,,,they are DIFFERENT in that the PCM monitors the alternator performance. If you swap in a NON VALERO alternator, you WILL get a CHARGING SYSTEM FAULT message.
DO NOT, turn your OEM alternator for a core!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It will physically fit and all the wiring / plugs are the same. The only part that I do not know is if the PCM will be happy with the increased output. Like I said, someone will probably be commentating on that aspect of the swap.
Heck, If you have it, install it. I will NOT hurt anything. The only thing that you will see is CHARGING SYSTEM FAULT message on the DIC if it isn't compatible. Alternator swap is a SNAP! , 0ne hour and your DONE!

Well, I went to the GMPARTSHOUSE and according to their website, the 99 and 02 have the same alternator, part # 10316182 unless it's an automatic, then it's part # 10353440. Not sure why the automatic is different from a manual transmission but according to the site it is.
Bill, are you saying the 02 has a higher output than the 99's alternator output? Or, are you referring to the high output alternator I plan on putting in my 02?
It sure looks like a pain in the *** to change in either vehicle. The 02 has so many chrome panels in it that will have to be removed before I can do anything with the alternator. The 99 is supercharged so it really looks like a pain in the *** just to get to the tensioner. I wish pot was legal in Iowa

Member GCG has posted the regulator info many times.

Worst case put the right regulator into the alternator and it will work fine. The PCM has no clue what the current output of the alternator is, only the PWM of the regulator.

So what I'm understanding from you guys that I CAN use my 02's alternator in my 99 but I'll have to put in a new regulator? Where is the regulator located?
