Persistent HUD display problem

As I wrote before, my HUD display got progressive dimmer over a period of a few months until it finally went out, with no response to the dimmer switch or page button.
My mirror control works fine and the height of the display is not a problem - there is no display, no visible light inside the unit even in total darkness.
I tried the repair of soldering the 2 leads together to bypass the photoresistor in the unit but that had no effect - still no display.
I got another unit out of a 2004 with only 22,000 miles on it (looks brand new), plugged it in, and that one also has no display at all, mirror motor works fine.
So where do I go from here? Get another HUD unit? Doubt that will help.
And my windshield is clean.
The IPC works fine, fuses 19 and 25 are intact, but can the problem be in the IPC, or do I next replace the HUD controls because maybe the problem lies within the dimmer switch?
Is there any way to test that unit or anything else that can cause the display to slowly dim over time and them go out? Anything inside the IPC I can investigate? And why should that crap out?
I can understand how the dimmer switch could just fail but not understand how it could behave like this, and if I replace that unit and it still doesn't work, then what?
Somebody help me, I really don't want to put my car back together, button it up and just bury the dead HUD display in the dash. I miss that thing.

Have to take it out for a ride tomorrow and check it out.
Interesting, I had to reprogram my key fob after I was dome, didn't have to do that to unlock the car this morning before I started on it. Had the doors open all day but the car was conected to a battery charger and never got run down.
