It's difficult to see if that's a gasket or the block without you telling us. So, I can see where bobgroger was concerned. You even told me earlier the gasket was still there when I inquired, and I was concerned still. Pictures are always hard to view, especially ones using a flash. A flash will show .001% rust like it's rusted beyond hope. Same with other types of dirt. It's just hard to see without either a stereo image (2 eyes) or a video with changing perspectives.

I hope you can get away with your current block and just rebuild that which is damaged. It's already a big enough pill to swallow without making it 1/2 again the value of the car.

I hope the block is good too. The shop isn't open till Monday, I will give them a call and discuss with them then.

Those are heat splits in the stock iron sleeve ! I’ve personally never had this or come across this. But iron deterioration occurs with constant heat and cooling . It can be worse in cold environments ! This natural break just happens with iron and many other metals. I would deem this block not reusable due to the top being worn thanks for the circles. And further more 5500 will get you a entirely new engine sir ! I’ve seen stock ls6 for 2500 all assembled and new thank you! Or if you want big power do what you will I’m just trying to help out you know that top is a goner and how long really is it going to last and destroy all you new parts?

I would say if your up to the task start fresh even your heads could have suffered the aftermath from the heat ups obviously the piston did!! A retune should have happen! I have more then enough knowledge of how American aluminum built formed stuffs. Yes aircraft trade is totally different however sir all heads aren’t a pure aluminum. Nickel and such were structured into the smelting pot! And what you get is a great design but it’s the way the world work they were made to be replaced. You can chance it! But I wouldn’t nope I bet half the guys /gals here would either! If your tracking it I worth a gamble for a race or two for a everyday driven street nope your gonna fry that engine again!

Common sense day even the heads are I bet warped ! That why the head gasket failed ! Look at a warped gutter it’s the same it sorta smiles at ya when it wears out lol

The heads have already been milled. It took .003 to clean them up. I completely agree the car should have been retuned. I'm in the process of trying to find someone else to tune the car. I think I may buy HP Tuners so that I can data log and see what the tuner has done.

if you can find someone that already has hptuners you can pull the tune and look at it without spending any credits you just can't make any changes... you can datalog too but there's nothing to log at this point

I'm trying to learn and get ahead on the upcoming tune. You all have shown me that I should have paid more attention to the car and tune.

If I buy HP Tuners and 2 credits can I give that to the tuner and have them tune on my HP Tuners and not their HP Tuner or is that something that is frowned on?

I would assume that I will have to do a crank re learn on the car since I'm putting a new crank in, is that correct? I'm reusing the same crank and cam sensor.

What wideband and fuel pressure sensor did you guys use? I will have to admit there is not a lot of room with the TSP headers and midpipes due to how close the CATs are to the headers and placement of the stock O2s. It looks like I will need to put the wideband behind the CAT and not before.

Aem 30-334x series ! In my opinion a builder will most likely use their device as it’s probably free already lol however it’s nice to have your own. Or if you are having a a remote tune done a street tune ? They could do it on a dyno and not be there! I went the remote route ! Street tune WoT at 7300 b4 limiter turn on oh that glorious sound kinda like a hyper car lol! I like remote tuning because ......waitttt for it hahaha ! You can and get to keep all of the files ran all your logs and you can eventually teach your self something off those files it’s a win win ! To share my mind find the right enthusiast tuner. There’s a difference of your car running a cruise command or a simple under throttle. All parts of the power band throttle timing spark fuel altitudes throttle crack and so on correcting tuning and yes there are many tuners but I seek out those who go above and beyond and strive to better their own work !

You could build something off the hpt site platform if you willing to gamble on tune quality...they have tune build specific up there ! I wouldn’t recommend it lol but it’s a option you have !

I don’t know the least about actual tuning your adjustments.

Heres a little reader for ya ! Mine does seek out this sought after ratio of performance perfection https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...-ratio-be.html

The AEM widebands are fine. So is their Fuel pressure gauge. Both can be logged with HPT. And good for you, both are important in a supercharged car.

Your tuner should be ok with using your laptop, interface etc. If not, no big deal. He can provide you with the channel list (Things you measure) as well as the layout file (Things you display) and you can follow along. You will get the new MVPI2 which works well. You will have to hardwire the wideband and fuel pressure to the interface plug. it's not hard.

I can help if you like, I tune a bunch of turbo and supercharged LS stuff. Even fixed the tune in an 03 Vert with the A&A blower setup last summer.

Fingers crossed on the block...…..those cracks look pretty real to me.
If it's dead, you can probably find another LS1 or LS6 block. Might take awhile.
Staying alum, there were 5.3's that can easily be bored to LS1 size. Somewhat hard to find though, and might have to buy a complete engine.
Next best would be a gen 3 6.0 iron block. About an 80lb weight penalty, but they are strong and everything is the same as your LS1 as far as bolting it in. No real need to stroke it either.
And then finally, a gen 3 5.3 iron block can be bored to LS1 size as well.

I actually have an innovate boost gauge/wideband for sale if you are interested... it uses a common bosch lsu 4.9 sensor like many of the others and has outputs to log in hptuners... if possible I would recommend removing the cats and put the wideband in the driver side header collector if you are only using one wideband, the driver side bank tends to run leaner

If you get desperate and find that your block is not usable, I have a complete LS1 sitting at work. Was in perfect running order when I removed it. Did not use a drop of oil, not a single issue. It's a long block but no intake. Has manifolds on. Even has coil packs and all that. Was around a hundred thousand miles, 83000 of them I think were put on in the first three years of the cars life. A lot of road miles between California and Nevada. It was an A4 car. I would sell it cheap. I also get a deal on shipping.

Unfortunately VA is strict about there state inspections and I have to keep the cats. I was looking at the header and the only problem is that there isn't much room to get a second sensor in the header without it being right next to and inline with the factor O2.

Ron,
I appreciate the offer on HP tuners help and I might just have to take you up on it.

We shall see when I talk to the builder tomorrow. Hopefully we are good. I have found a Gen III 5.3 aluminum and steel block here local already. I would like to keep the LS1/6 block but we shall see.

I have another picture on my phone that shows a different angle of the "cracks" and they don't go all the way across like the picture above. However I'm out on a ship right now and can't get the pictures off my phone.

KT

Looks like you can use regular to log but you can't make your own changes to the tune. Your going to regret (IMO) not getting the tunable upgrade if you continue to keep modding. Taking it back to the tuner gets expensive. Ask how i know. But that's just me.

The way i look at it is, what's the point logging and see the tune needs to be adjusted and don't have the ability to do it .but make appointments and then pay.

It's overwhelming at first, but once you get to know what parameters to adjust it's not bad. I was tested with an IQ of 57 and i can do it.
JMHO.

pro cable allows you actually live log your afr it’s another expensive add on 250 ish I think. That’s just for the upgraded software through hpt and the actual cable what I pictured above everything was in the the box , gauge ,wide band , hook ups / piggie back so you can run your hpt also it’s like you plug the piggie back in so your afr gauge can log and has enough power then your hpt fits on that all on the obd2 port ! What that guy said is right if you don’t get the needed parts now to log and tune later then it’s a waste of time and money! I thought and planned and read more before buying most of the stuff I have a long list pay pal and affirm love me lol !

I stock pile my parts then replace and re tune FYI!
