You're right, it's not. My Z06 with 70k, spun freely by hand when tested *out of gear*, and these were what remained of the belleville springs that came out of the LSD:
And the clutch packs were TOAST:
I did a rebuild of the LSD using C6 Z06 clutch packs and belleville springs.
When you rebuilt yours, was there a special procedure for setting the lash on the ring an pinion? or can I just make sure all the shims are in the same location and torque it back together?
Fortunately if you're only R&R'ing the diff, you can leave the shims alone. My bearings seemed fine so I didn't replace them. The shims sit behind bearing races that you don't need to take out.

That is great to hear. You dont happen to have a write up or any references on the job do you? I am going to pull the trigger and take this under. 3 of the cars i compared to that are friends have the same issue as mine. Thanks for helping me indentify the issue!
Good luck! Only thing I don't know is if you can get the diff out without fully removing the rear crossmember. My gut says yes, but it may still need to be lowered and supported. It's not difficult to remove the rear crossmember... just cumbersome (especially when doing it solo like I did).

We have a lift at the house, and my brother has had the driveline out of his car so I will enlist his help on the job in exchance for some liquid patience.
Both Belleville washers were broken and had sections missing. There was scoreing inside of the diff casing, nothing crazy. I replaced with C6Z clutch packs, washers, side gears and shafts. It was a pleasant weekend job. Thank you for all of the input and help!!

Just because it's on the internet, doesn't mean it's right
Think about it: if you have one drive wheel on the ground, trans in gear, and you're turning the free wheel, you're spinning the trans and the engine as well. So you're not succeeding to turn it because you're fighting engine compression. If you put the trans in a higher gear I bet you'd find less resistance to spinning the
Please explain how you would expect to do an A4 using your "Higher gear" method?
Its crazy, since I have done this repair. I have found 100% of C5 diffs tested have all failed. This is 5 total in the last month or so. If you have not tested yours yet the test is free and super easy, then at least you know.

Wow that's insane, thanks for making this data point for us. Have you tested your breakaway torque since the rebuild?
