the 228r is a nice cam, realize all of it's horsepower gain is at 5000RPM or higher. I'd keep it on a 112, it will be lopey enough.

Also realize that Cali is now starting to block any modification to the ECU, so as soon as they hear your car, they will check for that modification.

What year is your car?
2001. Im either going to go with the 228r in a 110 lsa or bfd, or even a ms4. I think the 228r in a 110 lsa will be plenty choppy

Don’t get to big of a cam. You’ll hate the car. DD or not.

FTI street sweeper is about top of the line for stockish LS1 long blocks. Easy 420ish HP and a nice sounding idle.

462hp crank maybe. On a 241 headed LS1 cam only 462whp ain’t happening. 228 isn’t a big cam anymore.

I'm not too worried about drivability. I'm trying to push towards 450whp with a rowdy sound. However I am concerned about reliability, so I am going to upgrade valve springs and whatever else needs to be done.

valve springs and trunnions bearings need to be done in stock form. Mandatory for any cam. If your wanting to max out HP on a stock 241 headed long block and have good street manner then the original street sweeper will get you closer. It’s a 236/240 cam. PTV definitely needs checked.

I did the 228R 114 LSA and a set of Trick Flow heads, among a few other upgrades. I got 469HP.
Heres the idle.

how much will performance heads cost? And the only really bigger cam I'd consider is the well known ms4. would you recommend the ms4 or the 228r?

I've got a 228R 112 LSA cam on my '99 with a FAST 92 manifold, 25% underdrive damper, LS7 Throttle Body, BBK shorty headers, Vararam CAI, Borla X-Pipe, 30 lb injectors, a 2500 RPM converter, and Z06 TI mufflers. With the cats removed I'm getting 370 RWHP at 145 MPH at 5600 ft in altitude. With the cats I was getting about 320 RWHP. I removed the cats because we determined they were too restrictive for the setup I was running, and since one of them was an El-Cheapo replacement we felt they may be partially plugged. I will be putting new cats on it since I live in Denver, Colorado and will need to pass emissions in October. It doesn't have a 'radical' lope to it, but you can hear the cam if they know what they're listening to. If they don't know, who cares what they think? I really like they way mine runs. It's relatively streetable, as long as it's not raining or snowing, but that's more due to the Mickey Thompson ET Street tires. My tuner said tuning my car to meet emissions, even with new El-Cheapo cats will be easy. Also, since my car is a '99, I would be exempt from the new CA law.

Truth.

I had an insane NA head/cam car for a while with full exhaust and cut outs. And it was fun as hell to drive....

.... For about 45 minutes at a clip.

Then you were happy, even eager, to get out of the damn car. You had a headache, had been vibrated so much it felt like you had been beat up, and you were cooked and overheated from the exhaust. And this is from someone who loves badass cams. Lol. I still loved it and drove it a ton. It was amazing. But I'd be lying if I didn't share the owner experience of such. The part you never tell your friends, and only admit a decade later to people online who you'll never meet in real life.

i usually don't drive my car for longer than 45 mins and when i do i will just have to suffer. A previous person stated that he only got 390 whp with the 228r, which just isnt enough. Will an ms4 or something similar get me closer to 450 whp?
