I have heard, running straight pipe from the cats to the back are not that loud (not loud enough to get tickets)... seems that can't be true. There must be a "muffler" right ,for back pressure??
Re: Has anyone tried straight pipe (Capt. Cool Beans)
I have TPIS headers, no cats, Magnaflow X pipe and Corsa Indy mufflers capping the system off.....I could not imagine how the car would sound without mufflers....WAY TOOOOOOO LOUD IMO. It's way too loud now.

Re: Has anyone tried straight pipe (Capt. Cool Beans)
Captain
I changed my stock 98 mufflers to ZO6 mufflers. While I had the system apart I cranked her up and almost didnt put the Ti system on because the open pipes sounded very cool. I have a ZO6 and wanted my 98 to sound simular. It didnt!! My solution is to install the Quick Time Electric Cutouts. I can electrically open her up and rock with the best or close her down and cruise quiet!
I have a stock Ti exhaust system with stock cats and manifolds.
Re: Has anyone tried straight pipe (Capt. Cool Beans)
How much for the electric cutout(s) I am not sure about the back pressure with straight pipes(should be?), or if the open pipes are to loud for the pooolice! Thanks for your comeback
Re: Has anyone tried straight pipe (Capt. Cool Beans)
I just did straight pipes within the past month. A buddy of mine talked me into it. As it turns out, I pretty much like it!! There is alot of resonance, but then again, mine is a convertible. If you put the tips on just a little bit further, and I do mean a little bit, it helps alot. The idle sounds pretty wierd, but when you rev it all the way through the RPM range, it sounds very, very mean. Much like a tuned down Nascar. One day, I would like to do an exhaust system, but I can't afford that for quite a while, and this is definitly a cheap way to get sound. It drove me nuts when a mustang or trans am pulled up and had more rumble than I did!!! :mad
Re: Has anyone tried straight pipe (Capt. Cool Beans)
I have played around with spacers on my car.
I just spaced out the flanges between the mufflers and the stock H pipe.
It was very loud, but sounded very cool.
At most speeds it wasn't ridiculous, but cruising at high speeds ~80 it had a ton of resonance.
I haven't kept it that way for a long period of time, I am going to go with the cut outs as well.
For me being able to chose between being obnoxious and appearing to be a sleeper stock car is best solution.
If I want to wake up the neighbors, just flip a switch, if I want to surprise someone on the street who thinks the car is stock, just leave em closed! :smash:
Now your speaking my language  I feel the same way. It's going to be cool to roll up to a light and flip the switch on an un suspecting RICER or better yet a RUSTANG :D
Re: Has anyone tried straight pipe (Capt. Cool Beans)
Thanks to all for the info! I will be getting the Quick Time Electric Cutouts. by the way I have had the car three weeks and just run 13.46, not bad for stock(??) Thanks
Re: Has anyone tried straight pipe (Capt. Cool Beans)
I picked up a slightly used performance choice exhaust kit, which is a chambered exhaust system with no mufflers (From mid-america). The full system retails for around $500 with chrome tips, I got my used for $175. It is pretty loud, at least my wife thinks so. I think it sounds awesome. Haven't got any tickets so far. I don't seem to be having any backpressure issues either.
NASCAR is good, maybe the borla xr1 would be a good option for ya. It only uses a resonator after the cats and no mufflers--its over the rear axle and down and out through the middle with stinger syle tips.
If you wanna hear loud, you should listen to this guy's car.
John,
While at OBI one morning, I was able to hear you going north over the Robert Moses Bridge, lol.
Re: Has anyone tried straight pipe (Capt. Cool Beans)
I run loudmouths which are essientially pipes straight out without the inserts/ baffles and the only time it is really loud is at WOT. I do on ocassion set off my neighbors car alarms in the morning when I leave the house. I do not have headers and mine is a CA car with the pre-cats which help keep the noise down. I have been told that with headers this setup was really to loud. One of my concerns was getting a noise abatement ticket as I live in the city
but have had no problems to date, but I have also learned when not to get on it also, like when a cop setting beside me. By the way I had a cop tell me he wound't give a vette a ticket as there suppose to sound this way, he just goes after the ricers with the tuna cans sticking out the back. I have had many compliments on the way my vette sounds and I love it, but to each his own. :)
I have the SLP's w/out baffles and gutted cats....sounds awesome!! 3 years like this and no tickets! (I just idle by when I see a squad)  Long tubes as well!
I like pulling up next to the ricers and hittin it at about 2k with my loudmouths Scares the living sh** outa them and flusters them so bad
all they can do is stare with their mouth hanging open. Lets them know what a real car is suppose to sound like instead of a fart popping tuna can sound
that smells like spoiled fish. Maybe I was a little to harsh, think so? :D
Here is a ricer test for you!
YOU MIGHT BE A RICE ROCKET JOCKEY IF…..
*I must warn you! If you see yourself in any of these situations it might be time to get a real car.*
1. You find yourself using the excuse “Yo, but you got twice as many cylindaz” after every race.
2. Your gumby pants makes it hard to shift.
3. You have stickers for parts that you don’t have.
4. When you drive by, WWII Veterans run for shelter.
5. Your exhaust tips are 4 times the diameter of your muffler diameter.
6. You will only race V8’s if they remove 4 spark plug wires.
7. You have “ALL MOTOR” emblazoned on your hatch right next to your 1.8L engine badge
8. You brag about having Nitrous and have a 15.50 dial in.
9. The exhaust system for your 1.8L is bigger than most Pro-Stock cars.
10. You spent more money on stickers and stripes than on actual performance mods.
11. You go to a performance shop and go directly to the decal and sticker bin.
12. Your tach is bigger than your head.
13. You have a shift light and your car is an automatic.
14. Your bright green $300 dollar air filter is bigger than your engine.
RICE PART II
Want to see if you're rice or not? Here is a hilarious list of things that will let you know!
You might be a ricer if...
*Your spoiler is higher than the roof of your car.
*Your exhaust sounds like an elephant fart.
*A softball will fit inside of your exhaust tip.
*You think performance stickers will actually increase your cars horsepower.
*You think that your 115 hp 4 banger is faster than a 300
hp V8 just because you added a Nuespeed sticker.
*Your wheels stick out past your fenders.
*Your car makes less than 175 hp, and has racing stripes.
*You consider a K&N filter & a big exhaust tip to be major modifications.
*You lie to your friends about winning a race (when you actually lost).
*You think Honda's are the fastest cars around.
*You can't see out of your back window because of all the stickers.
*You rev your tiny engine every time you see a Mustang, F-Body or Corvette.
*You tell everyone that your car is fast, but you know it’s really a slow P.O.S.
*Your car has performance stickers, but doesn't actually
have the parts that the stickers are advertising.
*You brag that your car makes 90 HP per liter (when its only a freakin' 1.3 liter engine).
*You will not race a V8 powered car unless the owner is willing to disconnect 4 spark plug wires.
*You brag about not using nitrous when your car has
another type of power adder (i.e. turbo, supercharger).
*You have a "Powered By *Anything* sticker on your windshield.
*You tell your friends that you smoked a big V8 powered
Domestic (but you don't mention the fact that it was a school bus).
*YoU tYpE lIkE tHiS.
Re: Has anyone tried straight pipe (Capt. Cool Beans)
has anyone install the quick time electric cut out on a stock exhaust? If I would buy it, I would have to install it right after headers. do you think it would be possible?
