Default Vette vs. ss

What is it exactly that makes a vette quicker than a camaro ss. I know they both have the LS1. Is it just the tuning and weight differances?

Pretty much the 200 lb weight difference is the only thing. Don't believe the HP difference. The SS's dyno higher if anything.

There is probably a cam difference as well. I know for sure that the regular camaro's have a milder cam. Don't know for sure whether the ss has true dual exhaust either.

:iagree: I think it is weight, cam and exhaust. I heard the SS's do dyno higher, but have not seen it translated on the track??

No it is just the weight.

I have the same cam as you.

The SS's dont have true dual exhaust.

So if I got a heavy person in the car with me, then an SS will take me?

I was at a signal light by myself when all of sudden the SS pulls up to me very quickly. We waited for the green. Then BAMMM!!! I popped my clutch and he could not keep up with me in 1st gear. 2nd gear forget about it...I never had to go to 3rd gear. He knew he should of bought a vette body and engine. Not a wanna be. Just having funnnnnn :steering: :steering:

What about the 3.42 gear, maybe that helps.

I'm sure the programing is different....is it the exact same 6 speed, what about the heads?
I thought they (ss) were 2 bolt mains as well....i may be thinking about the old LT1 though.

I srongly question the cam. At least for the 98s, they are known for the rough idle from time to time and from what I heard GM had made some decisions in the cam areas of the C5s and elected to go with the bumpy idle in favor of the stronger cam. Every now and again you can feel it on mine but the computer does a pretty good job keeping it smooth. There was a pretty good tech section at the C5 registry on this. Early on some of us were talking about rough idle and that is the answer that GM gave back.

From 2001 and up, the cams are the same. I owned a 2000 SS vert. Camaros have a better rear end and tranny for drag racing. They lose less HP than the Vette. SS's could be ordered from the dealer with the 345 HP option. Trust me, they are no slouch. I raced a C5 coupe with my SS vert from about 30 to 80 and we tied. Actually, I beat him b/c I got the jump, so I'll call it a tie.

the C5 has a much better weight ratio front to rear .... 55:45.. the vet has a tuned suspension.. trans and dfferential are in the back..shorter wheel base, much less body flex.. better 60 ft times because of the shorter wheel base..200 pounds liigher...lower drag coefficient..

If they were the same then why buy the Vette? They are $20,000 cheaper for a reason. Weight, cam, exhaust, aerodynamics, and the computer add to a spanking.

My neighbor has a SS that he races up and down the street all the time. I saw him the other day and he was no problem at all, and I have a lowly automatic. LOL Give us auto's some credit guys, we're peepier then you think.

I also have a friend who owns a SS. He had been on me about getting it on with him but we never had the chance. Then one day he found a vette and got spanked big time. He won't even talk about racing me anymore. He says he doesn't stand a chance and he's even added mods to his.

Bottom line, the SS is just like the Trans Am. They are faster than the Rustangs but they aren't as fast as us. :steering:

from 01' and on the motors/ tranneys/ gear ratios are the same. They even have the same oil consumption issues :skep: . The solid axle loses less HP than the IRS we have in ours. You cant even count aerodynamics till you get over 80. The C5 has better weight distribution on a road course, but I am assuming that you are refering to drag racing. We are 200 lbs lighter so that helps and we have true duel exhaust that helps the C5 breath.

Here's some brief info I found:

Corvette
$44,435 - $52,235
Weight: 3214 lbs.
Max Horsepower: 5600 rpm
Horsepower: 350 hp
Performance:
All coupe and convertible Corvettes come with the standard 5.7-liter LS-1 V8. Rated at 350 horsepower and 360 pound-feet of torque (375 lb-ft with the manual transmission), this engine unleashes effortless power at any speed. Equipped with the standard four-speed automatic transmission, the Corvette will hit 60 mph in less than 5 seconds. Opt for the six-speed manual transmission for even better times. To help rein the power in on slippery surfaces, acceleration slip regulation (traction control) is standard equipment.

SS
Under $30,000
Curb Weight: 3439 lbs.
Max Horsepower: 5200 rpm
Horsepower: 325 hp
Performance:
Opt for the SS performance package, and you get 325 real horsepower, thanks to forced air induction through an aggressive-looking hood scoop. The SS will hit 60 mph in a little over 5 seconds from a stop and continue on to a 13.5-second quarter-mile if you keep the pedal planted -- about as fast as it gets for under $30K.

Bottom line:
The Vette is $20,000 more
The Vette weights 225 pounds less
The Vette Max Horsepower is 400 rpm higher
The Vette has 25 more hp
The Vette is .5 to 1 second faster from 0-60.
The Vette is a Vette.

Do you really think Chevrolet would make the cars the same for such a difference in price? I have always been a firm believer in “you get what you pay for”. That’s why I own a Vette and not a SS. Yes, they are fast but the Vette is faster.

Road & Track has a great comparison on both cars:
