Trying to install my two tip stingers, and removing the stock exhaust is an issue. The part where it bolts on, the coupler has broken it's weld from the pipe. I was thinking of using some JBWeld on the coupler to put the weld back on. What do you guys think? Bad idea?
Also, I've got the rear jacked up to 3ft off the ground, but removing the catback is still not high enough it seems. I'm probably going to just cut the exhaust, but what tool is good for the job? I'm trying to go cheap here, so cheap ideas are welcome!
Personally, the $65. the local installer charged was well worth it to me. The stingers never would line up properly until the same weld you mentioned broke and was repaired after the tips were lined up properly. Good luck. :seeya
I would check a car-X place as they might install it for just a few bucks and fix the broken weld too. I doubt the JB weld would hold and you would need it tacked anyway. For cutting if you decide you could use a saws all or buy a chain cutting tool for about $15. Good luck with the project. I've done mine myself 3 times and 1 for a friend so its doable. Just plan on spending a lot of timejacking around trying to get them even and then staying there.
Not sure exactly where your broken weld is but I've welded / brazed many exhaust systems with coat hanger wire and a small acetelene flame. Just get the parts red hot and feed the wire over the break. Good as new. Never had one break.
Forget doing it with a jack. Go scouting around for a lift so you don't have to cut off an exhaust. It just isn't necessary. With some people skills, a muffler shop somewhere will let you use their lift. Slow down a bit and do it right! No charge for that opinion.
HEY VECTORZ, the flange you are talking about having the weld broken.....
If it is on the end of the cat's it may be under warranty.. On GMs emissions related components are covered 8years or 80K miles.. it needs to be repaird correcty.. to find out if it is still covered call your GM dealer, tell them the story and give them your vin number they can check to see if it will be covered.. as far as I know the dealer will repair the weld.. the last step for GM is to replaced the cats because it's a 1000$ cat. If it's not under warranty take it into a good muffler shop and have them re weld it all up.
Re: Need help - Exhaust installation (VetteTech81)
I agree with VetteTech81 :iagree:! Give the GM guys a chance and maybe get it fixed for free. I also doubt if JB Weld will work! It's great stuff but theres too much heat and vibration for it to last.I would not cut the muffler pipe. I too would check around and ask some local exhaust shopshow much they would charge you to remove ind install the pipes. The whole job wont take more than 30 min!
If you do have to cut, sears sells a COOL hacksaw blade holder that the blade fits into and you use it like you would a knife. Works really good in tight places!!
Please let us know how you make out!
