during the winter seasons my 97 c5 sits covered from nov thru mar. I do run the car at least once per 2 weeks as a precaution and i'm an old school guy that says it needs to run rather than sit. last year and just today, i find a critter nest in the drivers side fuel cover and i want to know if these critters can do damage to wires while they nest for the winter. I would also like to know if anyone has had a similar problem up here in the new england area and how to resolve it. your help will be greatly appreciated.
I thought I was the only one with CRITTER problems!
I have mice BAD!!! So bad infact that they built a nest in my fan motor!! :cuss :cuss :cuss :mad !!! I started the car up about a month ago and got this REALLY BAD """SEVERE""""vibration! I shut the engine down thinking that something was wrong! When I turned the key again, I heard the fan kick on and figured out what it was!
I put 2 mouse traps baited with peanut butter on top of the battery! Two nights later ZAP!!!! :D Two DEAD mouses! That will be your FIRST line of defense. I have a rock wall near my drive way and it seems to provide them a place to live.
I guess the Vette looked more inviting! Atleast they were mice with good taste! :D
I have a cat that does a good job at keeping them in check but he failed to find this pair of demonds.
About damage, yes they chew wires and build nest everywhere! They even chewed my car cover when it was ON THE CAR for nesting material!
The little bugger took the felt off the inside of the cover all the way across the area around the front windshield! :cuss :cuss :mad
I would set snap traps and catch everyone that you can!!!
I hates meeces to pieces. They ate up the wireing in my house a/c system once. I think they do it to keep their teeth from gettin overly long. Or maybe they have copper poor blood  I bought a parts car once that had a nest in it and the wireing harness was chewed to pieces. I would be doing weekly checks if I were you and start interviewing cats. Good luck. :steering:
I don't have this problem since I drive my car every day, but I've read that putting some moth ***** in a small dish or coffee cup under the hood (or wherever the critters are nesting) will keep them away.
I never thought I would hear the words Corvette and Mothballs in the same sentence. One trick i learned over here in our tent, mice love tootsies rolls. They cannot get them off the traps either. Just a thought I thought I pass. LOL
Tom, I am right up the road from you and this has been the worst year that I can remember for mice. First, you have got to get them out of there even if it means moving the car somewhere else for a while. The new cars have something in the wire insulation that mice love and they will eat the wiring. The nest in the climate control fan is very typical also. I read that lavender works and have been using that. I picked up some lavender bath salts at Wal Mart and some little aluminum bread tins (the real small ones) and put those around the car and under the hood. I don't like the smell of moth ***** and if you read the box I don't even like handling them. I also set up traps, lots and lots of traps.
My wife has a new BMW that we parked in the front yard for a couple of days. I opened the hood and they were already moving in with seeds in both strut mounts. It doesn't take long for the little buggers to move in. Also, they leave a urine trail that they follow. I bought some lavender bath wash at Wal Mart and mixed it with water and put it all around the car in hopes of detering the mice and covering the urine trail that they follow. Once the trail is set up, even if you kill the mice, others will follow the same trail. One other thing I learned, mice don't travel too far to find and store food. Can you move the car away from the area you generally keep it?
It is an interesting situation because both of our cars are in the garage. The Maxima is uncovered and used daily and attracts no critters. The corvette is covered and run weekly or every 2 weeks and they go right in the plastic cover. my main concern was the wires and now someone has said they even eat the car cover for nesting material. I will try traps, remove the car cover and cook them daily by running the engine. imagine waiting 50 years for a vette only to have it eaten by local rodents :reddevil
What a relief to here others had or have this problem. My "squirrel cage" fan was filled with cat food, dog food and dispossible cotton towel pieces chewed to bits. The car had been sitting for about 3 weeks and the fan would not turn due to the fact that the fresh air inlet was filled all the way to the cowl. I do keep my Z in a barn but I never expected anything like this. After a complete clean up I covered the Z and left it outside away from everything until I was sure I got rid of the mice. I like the idea of lavender, I'll give that a try.
I got a funny one... Yesterday I was at the Chevy dealer picking up some seals for my gear change. There was a real dirty C4 that they rolled out of
a service bay. The tech pops the hood and proceeds to tilt it open. Well out pops this big fuzzy thing at the speed of light and halls butt. Turns out a cotton tail had taken up residence in the engine bay. This scared the hell out of the tech! The C4 was being stored by the dealer for a servicemen who was in the middle east.
"Quote"I have a cat that does a good job at keeping them in check but he failed to find this pair of demonds.
Cat probably knew how protective you are about your vett and said" Hey mice, you're on your own, I'm not gettin near the vette" \\
NOT!!!!!!! He lounges all over both of them!:mad My 98 is black and he likes the warmth! He is declawed and so far he has kitty footed soft enough to be off the death list!
He knows that my wife hates it when he gets on her car!!!! 02 Z! All he has to do is see her come out the door and he is G O N E !!!! All that is left is paw print dust!!
I have started to put mouse traps around where the mice live further out in the yard! If I get them at the 50 yard line they will never get to the goal line!
