Default Replacement rear tires

Dad's getting ready to buy a new set before long. I don't want him to get the goodyear's again cause they suck and cost to much. He's gonna keep the stock size as well. What brand of tire would yall recommend? He wants something with a little better traction, less road noise, and doesn't cost $600 for two tires. I've heard alot of good things about the Kuhmo's. What about the rear tire sensors? Should we inform Discount Tire of those or what? Thanks for the help yall.

The Kumho's work great. Let the installer know that there are sensors on the valve stems. Also the wheels have to stay on the same side of the vehicle when they reinstall them. I put black electrical tape on both left side wheels to make sure. Fianlly, see if you can talk your Dad into replacing all 4 tires at once. The Kumhos are only about $600 http://www.tirerack.com for the entire set. It's better to have tires at all 4 corners that handle the same and it will really add to the ride, quiet, and handling of the car. It will be the best money he ever spent on the car!

Well I can tell you I work for goodyear and with my deal what I paid for the two rear tires I could have bought all 4 Kumhos. I was dumb I do not recommend buying them again and I wont. Yours best bet is to buy the Kumhos and get a road hazard plan so that if you do get a flat tire a tow truck would pick you up for free.
Tell your dad WASTE OF MONEY.
And from expierence the guys who have to put them on will like you alot better cause they suck to put on what a B!tch with that sidewall.
Hope I was of help.

Thanks for the help. Now here's another question. What model of the Kuhmo's should dad get? His car is strictly an everyday car with MAYBE a little high performance driving (he's never even taking the car past 4000 rpm's). Thanks for the help.

Kumho makes both a runflat and non runflat. They are both in the MX series.

Bridgestone S03s (good grip; MUCH less noise than the run cr***).

Get them from Sears. They'll price match plus 10% (well, at least they did for me) TireRack.com's price (incl. the shipping). They also did the install, but the Sears in my area has a good rep in our club for doing installs on C5 rims.

Or get them through http://www.tirerack.com . Or get them through any local dealer that you trust. If you ask, they may price match Tire Rack just to get the sale.

Alternative tire choice: Eagle F1 GSD3s through Sears, Tire Rack, http://www.onlinetires.com or a local dealer of your choice who'll price match. :seeya

I got Firestone runflats and like them a lot more than the original Goodyears. My rear Firestones now have 28K miles on them and I think that I'kk probably be able to get another 3K before I change them later this spring.
They're cheaper than the Goodyear's too.

Where I go to Wheel Works, they match the Tire Rack prices. They've done a good job in not damaging the pressure monitors.

I'm not quite sure at this point, but will probably stay with runflats since I've had two flats in 4 years and it's really been convenient. But it's always tempting to try cheaper non-runflats with better traction, etc.

By the way, I put the Firestones on the rear when I still had the Goodyears on the front and I didn't notice any changes or problems at all with the two different brands.

If your Dad wants the best traction in both wet and dry conditions, then the Goodyear GS D3s and Bridgestones (slightly higher cost) are a notch above the Kuhmos. The Goodyears are less expensive than the Bridgestones and are FAR less expensive than Michelins.

IMO, having an American legend as your car and NOT having an American tire name in big letters all over your tires just plain looks funny, if you know what I mean. A Supra probably looks okay with Korean tires, but the Corvette????..... not in my book!

I guess the Australian brakes, Mexican transmissions, German sway bars, Brazilian rotors, and on and on are O.K. though?

Also where are the tests that show the Kumhos are a notch below the S03S and D3s :confused:

Ah, but nowhere on any of those components you mention are there giant letters, shouting the manufacturer's name out for all the world to see!

Now, getting back to tires, I'll list the supertire ratings (best to worst) as listed in the November, 2003 issue of Consumer Reports:

1) Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3
2) Toyo Proxies T1-S
3) Continental ContiSportContact 2
4) Michelin Pilot Sport
5) Dunlop SP Sport 9000
6) Pirelli PZero Nero
7) Bridgestone Potenza S-03 Pole Position
8) Hankook Ventus Sport K104
9) Yokohama AVS ES100
10) BFGoodrich g-Force TA KDW
11) Firestone Firehawk SZ50 EP
12) Kuhmo ECSTA Supra 712
13) Sumitomo HTRZ II

Bob from House of wheels on here is selling a complete set of Falken 451's for 500 plus 40-60 shipping. The consumer report was off, they didn't list the Falkens which were number 4 as tested. Ask members that have Falkens and they'll tell you that their a great bang for the buck. Some of us on here don't like paying for a name, and like a good value. Consider the Falkens, I have them and their a great tire compared to the Goodyear runcraps.

Why not? I've used their car batter ratings as a guide for years. Last year they rated the Optima Redtop very highly and this year, the Sears Diehards are tops.

As a matter of fact, they have reported the C5 as a "top performer", even though reliability couldn't compare to the Honda S2000, but hey, who can argue with that?

Falken Ziex ZE 512s did very well (#1) in their All-season tires tests but was not included in the Ultr-high-performance tires testing for some reason.

I forgot to mention that Falken is a subsidiary of Sumitomo. Sumitomo has contract to manufacture for Goodyear, while Goodyear manufactures for Dunlop. They used to manufacture for Firestone years ago as well. Something alot of people don't know, but it's true. So if your concearned about your tires being made in America, think again, their probably coming from Japan too. Try this link for the details.

Did consumer reports tell you also that the Goodyear tires are made in Japan?? I think I would believe consumer reports as much as I believe Michael Jackson is innocent.

11) Firestone Firehawk SZ50 EP
12) Kuhmo ECSTA Supra 712
13) Sumitomo HTRZ II

Now, let's be a bit more specific:

Dry performance:

Braking: GY = excellent
Kuhmo = Good

Handling: GY = Very good
Kuhmo = good

Cornering: GY = Excellent
Kuhmo = Very good

Wet performance:

Braking: GY = Excellent
Kuhmo = good

Handling: GY = good
Kuhmo = good

Cornering: GY = Excellent
Kuhmo = Fair

Hydroplaning: GY = Excellent
Kuhmo = good

Noise: GY = Very good
Kuhmo = good

Any other questions? :flag
Same question where did see a test that rated the Kumho MX MX MX MX MX "a notch below" the S03 and D3?

Also as others have stated I wouldn't trust Consumers Report testing anything but vacuum cleaners and toilet paper. But again, they did not test the Kumho MX.

Consumer Reports did not mention country of manufacture. The point I was making is that Goodyear, like Chevrolet, is an American company. I don't think you can convince anyone that those huge KUHMO letters indicate that your tires are made or designed by an American company.

Now if you don't believe CU, check into their test methologies. You may very well be surprised at how thorough they are.
