I'm looking at using a set of dedicated rotors/pads for track days. I've read on the forum that the Caliper bracket bolts can only be used once. The only way to get the rotors off is to remove the caliper brackets.
So every time the rotors are changed are all these $5 bolts really just thrown away? Seems expensive if the rotors are changed many times per season.
Re: Question about changing brake rotors (Dan_the_C5_Man)
Only reason to change it for the Loctite. You may want a second set so you can have one cleaned and ready to go, just use Loctite 271. It's the only red I can find.
Just an FYI, the factory manual specifically states:
These fasteners MUST be replaced with new fasteners anytime they become loose or are removed. Failure to replace these fasteners after they become loose or removed may cause loss of vehicle control and personally injury.
You have been warned; now go live dangerously! :jester
Re: Question about changing brake rotors (Dan_the_C5_Man)
I reuse them; have for years. However, I always clean the old thread locker off the bolts with a wire brush, then I run a tap down the bracket threads to clean out the thread locker in the threads. Then, I apply Loctite, and make sure to torque to 175 N.m.
Yes, GM states to reuse...why, maybe, and this is a maybe, they feel that most people will not take the time to clean the bolts and the internal threads of the bracket. Again, maybe...me not say for sure. However, I will bet very few technicians change the bolts.
Re: Question about changing brake rotors (WhiteC5Vette)
Just as an aside, the list price for the bolts is around $8.50 each or $68 for a set of eight. I think a lot of people would be screaming if they were charged that when rotors were changed. The mark-up is incredible and they can be had for a lot less from the forum vendors.
Thanks for all the help so far. Still debating on whether to order a new set of bolts. I know the part number for the bolt is 14084051. Does anybody know if its recommended to replace the washers as well? Any idea what the part number is for those?

In my opinion there is no need to rplace the washers. They are not a crush design nor are they part of the sealing.
