I know that is what I'm doing...!
But.
Had a friend over. He asked me to check out his car because his new brake pads sounded real "metallic". I aksed how new the pads were and he said a couple of months and about 1500 miles. When I went for a ride with him there was a real obvious grinding noise on the right rear. When we pulled that tire the pad was down to the metal backing. Pulling the pins (not easy!) showed a ton of corrosion. The bottom pin had locked in place and and the caliper could no longer float. That meant the pad was in constant contact with the rotor. We got new pads and had the rotor turned as it didn't have a lot of damage yet. We pulled all the other pins and some had a little grease and some were getting ready to go bad.
I've always been mystified why the manual doesn't show this step, but I have never seen a good shop that didn't do it.
Well, I guess it depends.. My guess is what you were supplied with is anti-squeal compound, which would (potentially) go on the back of the pad.. The pin grease is something different.
No, the grease that comes with the GM pads is for the pins. It is a white silicone grease. There is a stick on shim for anti-squeal that also comes with the pads.
Never bought stock pads.. Thanks for the info!
Thanks for all the replies! I don't think you can get the pad out of the Z06 by just doing the top guide pin and bolt. It just doesn't come down far enough to pull the outer pad out. Didn't know about lubing the pins either. Great information. :yesnod:

If you need to, after you rotate the caliper over and off of the rotor, you can then slide the caliper off the lower guide pin by pushing it inward. This will give you all the room you need, but then of course you'll have support the caliper while you remove/install pads and clips, etc. HTH
BTW, to my knowledge, there is no difference between the Z06 caliper and any other C5 caliper, except for the color.
When I changed my pads for the first time several days ago (while I did the shocks).... I found that the rear calipers sat nicely in the floor pan over hang in the front rear of the wheel well.
Since I was doing shocks too.... for the front caliper, I grabed a zip strip, ran it through one of the pin hole and around the upper A arm.
This kept every thing out of the way for the rotor change as well. Did one side at a time... with the entire side on jack stands.
