Default Intake dyno numbers?

Does anyone have any dyno numbers for various intakes? It looks like the Blackwing and Vararam are very popular. I really don't NEED a new intake, but I have mod feaver, and just like messing with stuff!
Thanks

Here's a comparison of sorts - taken from a recent dyno day event.

Year mods RWHP/TQ (STD-corrected Dynojet)
2000V Vararam/Corsa Pace 326.3/329.5
2002C BlackWing/Stingers 328.1/340.5
2001C HalltchStinger-R/Borla Stngrs 328.6/352.2
2002Z06 Bone stock 361.7/347.2

My advice: If you want more HP and impressive torque, get the Halltech Stinger-R intake system. For $199.00, you not only get the largest air filter made for a C5, but also, a larger-than-stock airbridge and smooth TB coupler. Bang-for-buck, nothing even comes close!

2001C HalltchStinger-R/Borla Stngrs 328.6/352.2

Man, the torque on that is awesome. Looks like the HP is about the same across the board, but that is one heck of a torque increase. I have Borla stingers too BTW.

Thanks a bunch for the info.

Dave, do you know if any of those cars were tuned?

I haven't done anything myself other than window tint, but when I purchased the car, it came with a Borla exhaust. I assume this is the one that everyone calls a stinger. Has a good sound, but not too bad like a cut-out and two pretty good sized tips.

I was gonna save my money for wheels and tires, Nitto 555s and Z06 Motorsports probably, but for $200 this sounds like a sweet intake.

Allan,

I'm pretty certain that none of those cars were ever tuned. Tuning around here is fairly expensive $400-600 and 8-10 RWHP is possible. Needless to say, I was very happy with my torque number.

That's a pretty wild number for what you have. I put my Halltech Stinger R back in last week, and ran Autotap on my trip back from Andy's on Saturday. I haven't had a chance to really scope out the data, but I noticed on a couple occasions that the intake air temp hit 140 (ambient was around 85). The fact pattern was a brief decel (freeway traffic) followed by acceleration. I have the holes in the fog light shrouds (a la Z06), but my guess is that the engine air moves forward on decel and then takes some time to clear out. Now, the point is I never noticed that with the Z06 intake I had on the car, maybe because with the Z06 intake the actual inlet is pointed toward the bottom (fog light shroud area) while the Stinger just pulls air from anywhere and everywhere. I'm going to do some more testing. Your radiator shroud intake mod probably avoids the issue.

Yes, the CAI mod does make a difference and I hope to borrow a Davis OBDII engine analyzer soon to verify my seat-of-the-pants and skin of the hand results. As I mentioned before, when I return home from work, I can now pop open the hood and feel a cool filter and airbridge, whereas before my CAI mod, everything was very warm to hot after the same trip home.

When I ran the analyzer last year, my intake temps reached 147 or so at 20 MPH and that was when I had the Z06 air box installed. At that temperature, the LS1 and LS6 are down 10-12 HP, according to Jim Hall.

Brent,

I would do an air intake for $200 and pick up a used LS6 intake for another few hundred... Those two mods together are a nice gain.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll go for the air box first, then wheels and tires. I really want to get rid of the wagon wheels and Goodyears.

Mark,

You took the idea right out of my head an hour ago while driving home from work and thought to myself that a used LS6 intake plus the Stinger-R would be a great bang for the buck package. $200+~$300=$500 for about 25rwhp gain. Not bad at all. Hmmmmmm.....anyone selling used LS6 intakes?

-Don

Actually, Mark stole the idea, I'm just along for the ride!

Those number for the vararam are very impressive. So far I have seen a few sets of dyno numbers, and they are pretty close...so that tells me that I need SOME sort of intake.

Thank you all very much for all the great info.

You were running without any holes in the fog light shrouds, right? I'm thinking that with the holes and the Z06 lid, there is a better chance of pulling air from in front and below, rather than above (the really hot stuff) that I'm now getting with the Stinger. Just a thought - something to test. The formula I've seen is you lose 1% for each 10 degrees, so Jim Hall's statement is right on.

Allan,

There's NO doubt in my mind that intake temps are now much colder after the modification. With 2 people working at it, it takes 2.5 hours, but the results are very evident, especially after the engine has warmed up. If you ever need assistance, let me know and we can do the mod on a Saturday.

As far as the dyno numbers go, one must remember that even though fans may be used during the run, they are low-speed fans and don't do much to cool the intake air. A great comparison would be if a high-speed wind tunnel-type fan were used and the hoods, closed. Still, the dyno runs show that significant improvements are just a couple of hundred dollars away.
