The six speed in my '97 has the following issues as diagnosed by a close friend who does the Vette repairs for a local Chevy dealer: the fifth & sixth shift rails and forks need to be replaced. GM Tech Center also recommends replacing the fourth gear rail, forks and synchro assembly due to an inherent weakness. The options to this point are to rebuild or secure a rebuilt. Cost range including labor is $2,700 to $4,000.
The tech friend suggested going on the internet to see if any of you have any ideas as to what can be done. Obviously, it has to be repaired, but before I drop that kind of money, I want to be sure all options have been explored.
Thanks, in advance, for any input that can be provided.
listen to Chris and call Rodney--and your trans problems are over for way less money--he also uses steel forks like the ones in the Viper version of the tranny that will not break---all the better drag guys on the forum are running his tranny-I couldn't be happier with mine and I traded mine in with him when there was nothing wrong with it just to save having to do it later---its a good time to think about a good clutch as well a lot less labor while replacing the tranny---exedy single disk should suit your needs perfectly and unless you add several hundred hp its the last clutch you will ever need---
