Default break in for new rear diff

Could not find it in the search. Vendor forgot to send break in procedure with 4.10. Many thanks to Mike Mercury's carrier mod procedure.

Per DTE's sheet:

"Please also allow at LEAST a 300 mile break-in period before full throttle operation to avoid gear set galling and to maintain DTE differential warranty."

When I changed my diff, I was told to drive at varying speeds for 3-500 miles, making sure I decelerate to heat up/harden the other side of the gears. I was also told to do 15 tight circles in one direction, then 15 the other in a parking lot. Drive short distances, 10-20 miles at time, and let it cool down. This heat/cool cycle hardens the gears.
After the break in, change the oil and additive and "drive like you stole it".

Thanks for the response. I notice a chatter noise from the gears. Is the normal before break in? I used Redline oil. Maybe I should switched to GM oil after break in. I did not have a problem with Redline on my old diff.

My rear makes no noises, but I'm using GM additive. If fact, it's so quite I now hear my tranny wining in 1st and 2nd.

When I put 3.73's in the old C4 the advise was... brake in for 500 miles, stop and go traffic.

Enjoy your new gears!

DTE recommends RedLine gear oil with the limitied slip additive, and a 4oz bottle of GM's L.S. additive as well. The chattering you hear is your diff. telling you to add the GM stuff!

DTE installed 4.10s on both of my C5s. Phil told me to take it easy for 300 miles to let them break in. I went about 400 on the first set and they were noisy after I kicked it a couple of times. DTE replaced them for me. I went well over 5 on the next two sets just to be a little on the safe side.

Noise is NOT normal. Unfortunately you probably have a problem. Suggest you talk to Phil at DTE, he seems to be a straight shooter.

After 100 miles, the gears are quiet now. Hopefully, the chatter noise is just part of the break in. Will try changing the oil with GM additive after 500 miles like Dan_the_C5_Man suggested. Thanks for the responses.
