Secondly thanks for not having selective memory on this issue... I have not said much over the years on this issue.. and the acknowledgement here by you makes things better...

You still need to stuff that area between your outer quarter panels and your inner cabin.. 80 % of the tire noise comes from the rear tires and it comes through that hollow tunnel infront of the rear tires behind that flimsy piece of plastic called an inner wheel well... the inner wheel well acts like an ear drum and the hollow channel is the ear canal. enough said.. and Thanks again...

Well, to Bill for coming up with the idea and Mike for showing us how to do it. Bill, that was one GREAT idea and all of us thank you for solving our noise problem or at least 80% of it for me. Isn't the upper wheel well and the cargo bay all one piece of plastic? I agree that almost all our noise comes from our rear wheels and exhaust systems. With the windows rolled up, I can hardly hear cars passing me not that I let that happen all that often. Wind noise is zero. I can still hear the hum of my magnaflows but only mildly so. Turn on my Corvette Car Tunes and all I hear are my favorite car songs. What do we do about the wives that want to talk? Either of you have any ideas?

I sure enjoy my car a lot more thanks to you two guys!

I can't remember if I ever had a memory, but I did find a handwritten note indicating that I had referred to Evil Twin and Mike Mercury postings on the subject before I did the frost King install. Thank you both for your detailed postings on the subject. What really matters is that my Vette (as well as many others) is much quieter now. Keep trying new ideas and letting us all know about them. Thanks again.

If you want to get a revelation.. jack up your car in the rear... remove the tire, remove the inner wheel well, you will see a hollow tunnel which goes right up to the cabin... there is a clear an unobstructed opening that goes from this hollow tunnel right into the cabin via the hatch drains... this hollow tunnel actually amplifies the sound . If you check out my 4 year old tech tip and the picture found in my other tech tip... you will see what I am talking about...

Bill

You are the MAN!!! I am going to check that out on my ZO6 when I get it back from ZIP. I am going to try to figure out a way to seal that tunnel area off. If I do, I will document it and post it.

Thank you SO much for the tip!!!

I did the ENTIRE interior (front to back) with the Frost King insulation, Bubble wrap on the tunnel walls, Compartment Divider, trunk liner and she is VERY quiet and the heat is MUCH less.

Thanks again!!

Out of the 1147 days it has been there... your excuse is the tech tip section is out of commission???...seems like thin soup to me the tech tip section has been OOC for a week,,, IM just teasing... when you take off the inner wheel well you will understand why you have tire noise... think of that inner wheel well as an ear drum... the tunnel as the ear cannal,,, and those open hatch/trunk drains are 12 inches from your ears.

A question for Bill EVIL-TWIN:

How do we get to this inner wheel well? Do we need to put it up on the rack or is this something we can do in our garage?

Thanks,

Dynamat Xtreme
very good product for those with high powered aftermarket radios.

More expensive, adds more weight... but needed in some applications.

jack up the car remove the tire and rim( do this in one action ) dont remove the tire and then the rim.. you can actually remove them both at one time.,. ) joke !.
that 1/8 piece of plastic called an inner wheel well is held in place buy 8 or ten screws ( think they are 8 mm. ) then it will just pull down and out.. it weighs about 2 pounds.. if you put a flashliight to the door jam at the striker plate you will see the light looking into this tunnel..

too expensive , to heavy, and the reason I crossed this off my test sheet was there are instances of a tar smell from using this product (information found on several sound forums ).. Dynamat is a tar based product.. it will cost over 250 dollars to do the inside and outside of the car.. it will add almost 100 pounds.. and on hot days has been reported to give off a tar smell.. I did not want to correct one problem then add another.. since I was trying to kill two birds with one stone... in reducing tire noise and heat... noting the tunnel area especially near the cats get very warm..

you need to add sound barriers...make a channel for the hatch drains to run to the ground.. When the tech tips sections becmes available.. probably in a few more days you can go there and see the pictures Ive posted.. I used two products in the tunnel area... I used fiber glass insulation and reflex to line the tubs and the wall around the tunnel and I used the batting to stuff the tunnel. when the tech tip sections come back up you will see what I mean.. I just accessed the tunnel over the summer when I glassed in my rear brake ducts.. and there where no issues with moisture.. and they have been done for well over three years....
