Here is my experience to share with everyone. I removed the maf screen from my 2k vette.
I installed many after market parts. I have gone back to stock with everything, except the MAF, you can't put the screen back on. So I get a computer error. Guess what it is. My MAF is bad, it causes my vette to studdard upon accelaration. The cause from the computer reading "MAF" it does not know how to read the air flow.
So know I have to buy a new maf, since my is damaged. $110.00 from gmpartsdirect.com. You can only buy the ones without the screen now.
So don't do it, it was not worth it. Yes the new vettes have no screens, but they are programmed that way.
The screens are there for a reason. It acts as a flow conditioner and helps to take away the swirl in the air stream while creating a more uniform velocity profile. Surging can result from unconditioned or non-uniform air hitting the Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAFS).
I had a spare MAF housing that I descreened from my 97 Camaro Z28. Its the exact housing as my 99 vette so I decided to try it. Car runs great no codes and no surging, and I do have my original to swap back in if I want
I believe only the newer Z06's were designed w/o screens.
In Oct. (last month) I went to Xtreme Motorsports to have my 03 baselined. My dealings there have been with Mike. He has been really friendly, quite knowledgeable and willing to share info. about what works and what doesn't.
He asked me what I had done to the car so far. I told him a Z06 air box lid, Fram Air Hog filter and I popped the screen out of the MAF. His first words were: YOU TOOK THE SCREEN OUT ? Ooooh NO! that might be BAD !
As it turned out after the first dyno run with my toy, the AF ratio didn't turn out to far off. I was going back next week anyway to get a couple mods done and a custom tune on the dyno. Mike thought he could work with the missing MAF screen.
If you want to take the screen out it's easy. Just poke a screwdriver through the screen and just gently start prying up in a circular mannor. The trim ring/screen will just pop out.
From my little experience... DON"T DO IT. Unless you and your tuner have a good reason to.
Don't remove the screen. If you wanna try it out w/o screen, post on the for sale and you will find one cheap (just housing) and try it on to see if you like it.
The MAF with screen is really rare now since there was a long post about removing the screen and ton of people's done it to their MAF's
