All of us who have had our windows tinted have had to deal with the annoying black dot matrix fields on the back hatch. In fact, these dots are normal somewhere on just about every car made today. Look at some older cars and you will not see them.
The obvious question, of course, is when did they come about and why do they exist?
Because GM doesn't always make the best decisions. Here's another question.........why not use the factory tinted glass like they do on tahoe's and suburbans?? My 01 Yukon has tinted glass, out of the factory, on the rear passenger and back windows. Guess they thought the matrix was sufficient for tint.

These dots act as radio signal receptors as opposed to the antennas used on older vehicles..

I think this is true. I believe the radio antennae is behind the rear fascia but my service advisor (at my local dealership) told me tinting the window could adversely affect radio reception. FWIW, most C6 owners I asked did not experience degraded radio reception after tinting their rear window.
I found my old post....I believe calemasters called it a "diversity antenna."

I think the XM would be the only reception effected if at all with tint.
Actually, they were created by mistake. Back in 1986, in Argentina, a new company won the existing contract for creating a series of computer recreations for future automobile concepts. Nothing unusual as that was, and is, a common practice. As one of the new images was created and subsequently approved (Chevrolet Impala, I believe) and the associated parts were put into production, the windows were recreated exactly as indicated via the computer graphic. The company was emphatic when passing on the instructional designs that the production matched precisely with the approved graphic. The window manufacturer, Alamar, was also new and was committed to doing exactly as told to warrant future business.
What those dots are, believe it or not, are a result of PIXELS from the computer monitor! They were supposed to be a gradual built in tint! But, so as not to make a mistake, reproduced exactly what they saw! Truly amazing!
I thought they were there to diminish the glare. That's what I was told for the reasoning of having them up front right in front of our rear view mirrors - so that the glare does not blind you when looking in the rear view mirror. But like everyone else, 100% sure I am not.
"We" supposedly have all these GM guys on this forum* and other car mfr. guys here and no one knows or answers this question? Just goes to show you....
