Default Deposit amount?

I'm just wondering, how much did you guys put down as a deposit when you ordered your car? I've heard numbers ranging from $500-$2000. I am curious, can this figure be bargained? When they say that you can always cancel your order and get your deposit back, is there any written proof or can they just keep your deposit and give you some BS excuse? I understand that this would probably be illegal but I would have no idea what to do in that case....sue them? Thanks in advance for any help!

I had to put $1k down for the dealer to order. If I canceled the order, the dealer would have kept the deposit.

$0. My dealer said if I backed out he'd just give it back to me anyway.

$500 is the most that I've had to put down. If the dealer wanted more than that, I'd go find another dealer.

$2K here....Sounds like you're not very trusting of the dealer you plan to do business with? Get it all in writing so you know the up and downside...

... and if you order a car that is common ... the deposit should be refundable ... if you order a odd combo ... maybe not.

Our local dealer said on my dad's 06 Vert:

Mag Red + Tan Top + Tan Interior -> Refundable ... easy to sell
Mag Red + Tan Top + Black Interior -> Non-Refundable ... hard to sell

Not sure if that is a national thing ... but he was upfront on it ... so it was understood before paying the money.

Deposit was $750 ...

$1K down when I ordered my first C6 from the dealer. Got it back when I canceled after 4.5 months. $0 down when I ordered my 2nd C6 from the same dealer 2 years later.

Zero deposit but I order (most) cars through the same car broker I've used for years. I tell him what I want and he gets it....no deposit...no paperwork and no hassle. Once I tell him to get the car I want....I don't change my mind....I buy the car.

0$ - The dealer I ordered from did not ask for any money up front. We didn't do any paperwork until I came to get it. They didn't change the price on me when it came in, or play any games. If I ever get another Vette, I will go back to them.

I suppose they felt like they could sell the car no problem if I backed out of the deal. As a matter of fact, one of the other salemen told me while we were BSing at the lot that someone tried to buy the car the night before I went down there as they were unloading it!

thing is....i don't trust them cos it sounds too good to be true. I walked in a couple times throughout the last 6 months, asking about whether they accept GM Supplier pricing. Got mixed answers each time, most were along the lines of....we'll see what we can work out with u. All of a sudden, 2 weeks ago, was asking how much courtesy delivery would cost, and she found out I hadnt bought yet and said she would check if they gave me GMS. She said yes, with no hesitation, wanted me to go in that week to leave a deposit. Kinda raised a flag there, as to how quick they were to jump on it, I know that sales are slow and all, but still, sounded kinda like a too good to be true kind of thing. I'm like 90% sure that she's gonna tell me some BS excuse close to the time i'mma pick up the car, and tell me why they cant give me a discount. In which case, i'd take my deposit and go to a forum dealer. I know, i can always go to a forum dealer just straight up, but this would save $500 bucks, and I figured with that (even though it might be a nighemare) i can pick up something for the car, maybe a Valentine One or whatnot. Either way, I'm just trying to get more info so I am not diving into this blind-folded. Thanks for all the advice and I'll try to get something in writing from the dealer and inquire more.

I got a $1K deposit back from a dealer, but they screwed up the order and on an NCM delivery Vette at that.
