This may have been brought up before....... but I'd be interested in knowing the correlation of how this is panning-out on Autos vs Manuals.
I am checking mine this w/e. If they are lose I will first try red (high-strength) loctite and mark with a Sharpie. If that doesn't work then I'll double nut. If that doesn't work I'll fire-up the Lincoln and weld the ****.

I checked mine a couple of nights ago - both were loose (mine is a 2006 A6). Driver's side was about 1/4-1/2 turn loose, passenger was about 1/2-3/4 loose. I left the car on the ground and torqued each to 118 lbs with a 33 mm deep 1/2" socket & wrench from the folks at AutoZone.
From the amount of rust on the bolts and the shiny silver I uncovered when tightening, it would appear that the bolts have been loose for some time. They were probably that way from the factory, although I have no way of knowing.

I understand the cause, but what could be the effect? I ask because my friends WS6 just went into the shop for a ticking sound coming from the right/rear area and it turns out the axle was bad. Just wondering if this could cause this or what could happen from a loose nut.
From: Denton, TX My goal in life is to be as good of a person that my dog already thinks I am.
2005, Z51, MN6, 5,500 miles. Both sides loose, passenger side much more then drivers side. I used a 1 5/16" socket and it fit perfect. I'll be checking these often.

Thats what happened to me. Had a loud "popping" sound every time I touched the throttle and again when I hit the breaks! Was driving me Took it to the dealer and they fixed it. The service guy said he has seen a few like that. The axle bolts were loose! Problem started around 8K miles on my 06 A6. Its perrrrrrfectly quiet now.
Stopped and bought a Great Neck 33 mm 6-point deep socket today at Autozone (fits perfectly).
Add me to the list; after only 5,000 miles - driver's side ok, passenger side very loose. I added a dab of green (wicking) Loctight but think I will order a couple additional nuts to act as jam-nuts.
