I saw in Motor Trend that the new 08 Vette runs on regular unleaded. I have been putting premium unleaded in. Does it run on regular and if so does premium run any better?
On reg gas mileage suffers I know from exp.

no mods, except for intake, reg gas yields 29/30 mpg, consistantly. No knocks no pings,on the same 3500 mile trip, after 3 tanks of premium,no difference in fuel consumption. In fact there was zero sotp difference,in a quarter mile perhaps trap times may be off a bit with reg and perhaps not.Now I know not all engines are created equal, nor are all electronics, but my setup works with reg fuel, lucky I guess.
Why spend big money on a 400hp+ car, then try to save on gas cost?
...especially when 91 octane rated fuel is recommended.

I have only used it in Mexico on the bikes, it helps there.
They sell a variety of racing fuels at the tracks I run on. My car is tuned specifically for 91 octane so I've never tried racing fuels. My friend in a modded Evo does use higher octane racing fuel and he claims it increases power.
Using Mexican Pemex is always a crap-shoot. Just like with drinking the water....with Pemex you never quite know for sure what you'll end up with.

this one is pretty simple math. If regular costs $3 a gallon and premium $3.20, and you assume 30 mpg, then losing two mpg with cheaper fuel costs basically the same. If you get less than 30 mpg, it actually costs more. So why mistreat the engine ?
With winter coming on, I think you'd want the best gas you could put in the car, just to make sure it doesn't freeze up or vapor lock.
the top four auto makers recommend TOP TIER GAS. to find out why, check out toptiergas.com there are only eight refiners nationwide that are making it at this time. this has been discussed before here on the forum. all i use in mine. no problems at all.........cranky
you can use anything you want, and ignore the manual, if you choose. not wise, but you CAN do it.
what isn't written in the manual is that there is such a thing as "light pinging." that is, pinging that you have a great deal of difficulty hearing over the engine noise, road noise, other traffic and anything you may have playing in your car. altho not immediately damaging, it has a cumulative effect.
as the saying on CF and elsewhere goes, YMMV, your my mileage may vary...
Its not about being 'cheap' its about spending more that you need. I think the manual states if you are in 'competitive' driving situations, premium is needed, else regular is just fine.
To me, that means my daily, routine trips I use regular. If I plan to be a bit more agressive, then I use the 91 stuff.
i went on a trip with another corvette and he used regular and i used high test and every time we filled up he took more to fill up than i did so it hurts your MPG

Why not split the difference and use mid grade? That's what all my friends who have vettes use and with no problems. Even the dealers around here all say that you can use the mid grade without troubles.
Supreme, Premium, Ethel, Super, Top Dog, Who's your Daddy, this or that brand name for the latest alledged "high octane" pump gas, market BS aside...91 Octane rating is "recommended" for the 07.
Yet even with 91 octane I still get pinging = detonation. Not sure how that could be since 91's recommended and I use it exclusively, but I guess from my experience, crap gas regular's out of the question since my knock retarded computer can't even handle 91...or whatever BS name gas stations call it these days.

Wonder if I'd ping with 93. Light ping or heavy ping believe me, I know a ping...detonation. 93 is not pump gas top of line here. 91 is top pump gas here.
So for me, this is not wondering if I should use mid (89) or low (87) grade gas. Never used either. This is about I'm using top grade 91 and I still get detonation...on a 07 vette with no carbon instead pinging under certain conditions since it had 3 miles on it.
So, can we get some help from the engineer types? I was told that regular (87 octane) burns hotter than premium (91 octane) and can be a problem over time, that is, more likely to "burn" valves and pistons. True? Along with that information, I was advised that if I was to burn regular gas, to avoid it on long trips. I am ashamed that I do not know the composition of the valves or how they are coated/protected. I do know that the valves in my 911 are sodium cooled in order to withstand the higher temperatures found in air (and oil) cooled engines. It might also be helpful for someone to describe what that detonation - or pinging - is technically and why/how it is a bad thing for engines.
I figure the cost of premium is inconsequential when compared to the investment, my desire for optimal performance and just doing the right thing for the engine.
PC/Flame Protection Statement: I also realize this is just my thinking and others may see it differently. Hey, I'm new here.
check out this website: www.toptiergas/retailers.html this has been discussed and cussed on here before. top tier is all i use and never have had a single issue with my 05 vert.......
MT also has a reputation of giving the best automobile awards (advertising) money can buy.
You got that right...change your car magazine; not your gasoline. Use premium...GM makes plenty of cheaper cars that will "be all they can be" on regular gasoline.
