Only worth it if it's worth it to you. I agree that you should compare by ear. Personally, I love the NPP with Ed's Mild to Wild remote. One of the best toys I've ever seen.
I have an '08 w/o NPP. It drones with the valves open, so I'm going w/ a Corsa extreme. Loud when you hit the loud pedal, quiet and no drone at cruise.
I have the NPP with the M2W switch. Best of both worlds....leave it on auto or leave the valves open all the time. The sound is very nice when the valves open up.
I have the NPP with the Sunset Orange $55 one-button switch. IMO the capability of switching from a quiet exhaust to a straight pipe fantastic sounding exhaust is something I would definitely put on the option list. When I toured the factory on 1/31 I was told that most (90%+) Vettes coming off the line now have the NPP option. I am sure this will help in resale down the road.
One more vote for the NPP with switch, what is not to like!
Factory exhaust with great sound when you want it...
This question gets asked often and always gets a high majority in favor.
Love it, Love it, Love it!!! Definitely worth it but be sure to get the Mild2Wild from Ed with Pipedreams! I keep mine on wild most of the time but it is nice when we're in it for a longer trip to switch it back to mild. Corsas didn't really do it for me either...a little too exotic and a tad higher pitched that I prefer. The NPP has a nice deep growl to it. It does have a drone around the 1400-1600 rpm mark but the throaty sound makes up for the difference to me!
If you're questioning whether you should get it or not...I would test drive one with it before deciding. There was no question in my mind once I heard it though! Best of luck deciding!
You should definitely stop by one of your local dealers and listen to an 08 with the NPP option, or contact your local Vette club and see if any members have an 08 with the NPP option. I'm sure they would be more than happy to get together and give you a listen. You should really try and hear one before you decide.
Having said that, I have had my 08 with the NPP and Ed's Mild2Wild switch for over six months now and I am very happy with the setup. I really enjoy the sound of the NPP, as it is plenty loud for me, and a deep throaty sound. Good luck on your decision.
Gene...
When I want to "tone it down" around a black & white, the quieter mode is just a press of a button away. Even in stock mode, as soon as you get on it, it just plain ROCKS! It's the best sounding 'Vette exhaust system I've heard...from inside the car as well as outside. Money well spent IMHO
1. I live in California, aftermarket exhausts gives more ammunition for police to flag you down. Easier to fight in court that your exhaust came from factory.
2. Keeps your car civil bellow 3,000 rpms. (I know some of you don't want to).
3. If you ever sell your Corvette, you will have people looking for very specific options on your car. It will increase your chances of selling the car, but not likely to increase the value of your car. Used car buyers can be **** and could careless if the aftermarket is superior or equivalent.
NPP love it. With Ed's mild2wild switch I can start up in the neighborhood with quiet exhaust, and then once out of their select wild and I have a V8 growl that sounds great. Leave it quiet (mild as in factory setting) and then romp on it for passing and it comes to life. Cruise on the freeway in mild (factory setting) and you hear almost nothing. Best option I could have bought IMO.
I don't think much of the 'gimmicky' part-time, NPP exhaust option. Yes, it's a step-up from the limp sounding stock C6 exhaust but it's not all that great. I think you're better off with a full-time after-market exhaust...it will IMO sound better and any small performance gain will be comparable to the NPP exhaust. Many people like the 'mild to wild' switch with the NPP exhaust but (I'm sorry) I feel switching the sound of your car 'on and off' is kind of a joke...like a Pep Boys mod. Needing to install a switch IMO evidences the NPP is lacking right out of the box. Do yourself a favor...find a quality, after-market exhaust you like.
I have the NPP option on my 08 Z51 as well. It was a definite had to have option for me and, like all the others have said before me, it is even cooler when you buy the mild2wild switch and can show everyone how your butterfly valves can open and close with the flick of a button.
As far as resale....the majority on here who have 08's ordered it with it. This is such a cool option that Chevy is doing and I'm sure this exhaust option will be taken away from us when the rest of our HP is too. Then it'll be one of those highly sought after option codes like the munci "rock crusher" shifter of the 60's.
Sure you can find aftermarket exhausts that sound louder or better but they won't bring a dime more on the car 10, 20, 30 years from now when these things are classics.
Cant go wrong, just ordered the stingers for way under the NPP price! The NPP to me is a gimmick exhaust, (not to offend anyone), and I dont really care for it too much. It has a horrible sound compared to the stingers, or even corsa, GHL or any other aftermarkets for that matter.
I wouldn't buy an 08 without it. It sounds great. It works great. And it doesn't require any morons tearing your new car apart.
Unless fiddling with mufflers is a real big part of your life or you have your heart set on some special noise that you heard on the internet, it doesn't need much time wasted on it beyond the obligatory fuse pulling or remote control.
Besides that, it will make the car easier to sell and you won't have to worry about getting deducts from its resale value for moused parts with limited appeal.
