They scoped the cylinder and found no damage. The compression check had all eight cylinders within 5 psi of each other. I still have 99,000 mils of coverage on the engine so I'm happy. It runs great now. They showed me the valve spring and it was broken in two about 1 1/2 turns from the top.
I wouldn't expect a broken valve spring to allow the valve to fall into the cylinder, unless it shattered into a million pieces. The spring would just lose its ability to make the valve seal to the seat. This is funny because if you had taken a car into a mechanic in the 1960's, they would have checked the compression much sooner, after they found spark and fuel.
And it may still be that the two events just happened at the same time by coincidence. There wouldn't seem to be any connection between a valve spring and a DIC message like you got. It will be interesting to see if the DIC message comes back after a while without any engine roughness.
