There is a text file on each disc (VERSION.TXT) which you can read when inserted into your home computer.
The file will state one of the following:
(Version 1.0): "COMMENT=2004 ver.1"
(Version 2.0): "COMMENT=2005 ver.1"
(Version 3.0): "COMMENT=2006 ver.1"
(Version 4.0): "COMMENT=2007 ver.1"
(Version 5.0): "COMMENT=2008 ver.1"
------------------------
(e.g. If you have a Version 5.0 Disc, the VERSION.TXT file will read "COMMENT=2008 ver.1")
I posted earlier about sales dealer giving me a ver 3, when I picked up a 2008 model vette in July 2008. After gaining info from the members here on site, and researching the matter further...
I contacted the dealer a couple days ago with the info, and they agreed to exchange my ver 3 for the newest version. They put it in writing in an email to me. No charge to me. Only kicker, they said they ordered them and have to wait for delivery of the new disks.... guess that will be a couple months according to the posts here...

Reason: typo
FYI
Go to isohunt.com and search for 'GM NAV".
You will get 2 results for a v5.0 east and west image.
These images work in my 2005 with no problem, and download of both took less than 13 hours.

Any seen any updated discs for a Cadillac SRX?
Is anyone else downloading the files? I'm new to torrent downloads and the program says that it's going to be over 3 days??? I don't understand how the first guy got both files in 13 hours.
Do I need any special software to burn the .iso file to a DVD once I get it downloaded? I assume that it's going to have to be a DVD+DL right?

How many people are sharing, the speed of your network connection, and your network/torrent client settings all have an effect on your download speed.

In general, any DVD software that can burn DL disks will do, you need a DL capable burner and media (of course). Not specific to Nav but in general i've found it critical to use good quality media. Specifically TDK has always worked very well for me.
Can I post a "DUMB" question here.... How did all you guys with NAV get along before it was an option,,, I bought my car used (No Nav) but got a Magellan 3 years ago, & it STILL gets me anywhere I want to go..
Can you (anyone) please tell me what the big deal is about version 5 over version 4....
like i said my Cheep Nav ($300) gets me anywhere & its 3 yrs old... What is sooooo hot about GM Version 5.0 that people are having fits if its not here in 1 week ?
I know I'm a dork.. but I honestly cant figure out why someone would go nuts if they had Ver 4 and didn't get ver 5...
Can someone actually tell me of "1" POI the ver 5 has that ver 4 don't have !!
There is nothing magical about ver. 5.0 (the latest version) - it simply has more updated maps and is copied onto 2 discs to open space for future information. Nothing to write home about.
BTW - for those posting about copying the discs and burning your own, and for all those allowing or encouraging such behavior, you are committing a theft. I grant that GM's service on these discs sucks, and they are far too expensive. But, that give you NO right to simply steal the information and burn your own discs.

I remember how I got around...by pulling over and looking at a map when I wasn't sure about where I was or taking the time before a trip to go to AAA and get a TripTik (before Google and MapQuest). The on board Nav that integrates with the HUD is a great way to get turn by turn directions and be able to keep your eyes on the road.
I don't know about the differences between v4.0 and v5.0 but the Nav unit I just installed in my car has a v1.0 disc. There are some roads local to me that aren't there and almost 90% of the POI's close by are wrong. The information is at least 5 years old now and I just figured I'd try to get the latest information available.

I don't see it as an issue unless someone is selling pirated copies. Just my view though.
I bought my '08 in Nov of '07. I live near Chicago. the south extension of I-355 has been in the planning stages for 20 years, and was completed in 2007. still does not show on the nav map
next time I buy a GM (if they are still in business) no nav for me
my Garmin Zumo downloads map updates from the web
Garmin for me
I too live south of Chicago and I-355 has been open for almost 1 1/2 years now and it's still not on the latest update. This road was in the works for 20 years. Why would I pay 199.00 for incomplete data? Why would I pay 199.00 for something I already paid extra for when I bought the car?

Well for me, it has been 3+ months, not one week, since I ordered the update. I find this pretty excessive. This update was promised to me when I bought my '07, so I feel they should deliver in a timely manner. When I got the previous update, there were several updates to the map in my area, including new exits and roads.
I rarely use my Nav, but, would like to have the most up to date info. I certainly would not pay the price they charge.

If someone is NOT paying for a nav disk because they either copied it or got it copied through another party, that is theft. GM wasn't paid for it. There is no difference between that and buying a pirated copy of a movie or stealing music online. It's theft.

Thanks so much for the public service message. However some of us are waiting for our FREE copies of Version 5.0 and I personally see nothing wrong whatsoever downloading it from wherever pirates are forever.

Wow, you sure are taking a hard-line stance on this, are you an intellectual property attorney or something? sheesh...
