Last night driving in the Hill Country with lots of twists and turns and nothing faster than 45 or so it was at 190. Once I hit straight roads also going 45 it was at 200.
Ketchum, my Dmax ran approximately 175 solo and would gradually climb up to water temp of around 200 when towing. After it got there, due to the large mass, it would stay their for quite awhile. I towed 12.5K. 4500 lbs. is not enough load to heat up my little 1/2 ton. I would not be concerned with the trans temp on my Vette unless it exceeded engine temp. Later! Frank
In the search to find the optimal operating temp for our A6, I went looking in the Service Manual which has a VERY long chapter for the A6. I didn't find an "optimal" or "normal" temperature listed, and didn't go through everything, but page 17-42 and page 17-44 list the conditions to set code P0667 and one of the conditions is a trans fluid temp of over 158'F. That's certainly not an overtemp, so it's probably the temp for a "well warmed-up" tranny.
Problem is, getting up to 158' takes a long time. Yesterday afternoon was in the middle 50's here, we drove about 12 miles to some friend's house. Engine oil temp got to 180' (my personal choice for high power use) after about 10 miles, tranny was 117' when we arrived. Starting home with a slightly warmer drivetrain, trans got to 127' as we pulled into our driveway.
150/160 in normal driving I thought was in normal range. Not 190 PLUS unless being driving really hard. I saw 200 with hardly any stop and go. Speeds were 35 to 60 mph light gas pedal. So far from the other posts that is 'normal' I thought it was awful hot for easy crusing speeds and a handful of stop/red lights.
